- The episode's title is a pun on the 1998 American romantic comedy There's Something About Mary.
- In the episode's couch gag, the family members are players of the NHL. The fanfare "Charge" is heard while Homer lifts the Stanley Cup.
- When trying to get the free beer, Barney says "Easey Barney, remember the 12 steps" before performing a gymnastic movement. The joke is that 12 Steps is the name of a program to help people recover from substance addictions, behavioral addictions, and compulsions.
- After getting the free beer, Barney imitates the Road Runner from Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner performing its iconic sound effect "Meep-meep!".
- Howell Huser is a parody of long-time public access host of "California's Gold", Huell Howser.
- Bart, Milhouse and Howell dance to the song "Let's Twist Again" by Chubby Checker.
- The creature that attacks Howell parodies the Gill-man from the 1954 horror film Creature from the Black Lagoon.
- The Kitchen Wizard wrote a book about the life of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill between the wars.
- According to Homer, tourists never buy his map pointing to celebrities' homes. The map includes the name of Italian-American actress Isabella Rossellini and a potential place for a Denny's restaurant.
- Moe mentions Lean Cuisine, a brand of frozen entrées and dinners.

- The Prince of Denmark's March by Jeremiah Clarke is heard when Homer is promoting his Li'l Chapel wedding business.
- The "Wedding March" by Felix Mendelssohn is heard at Julio and Thad's wedding.
- "Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)" by Doris Day is heard during Marge and Patty's memories.
- A young Marge hangs a poster of American actor and musician David Cassidy on the wall. Cassidy was considered a teen idol back in his days.
- Patty, on the other hand, hangs a poster of Miss Jane Hathaway, a recurrent character from the 1962 sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies portrayed by Nancy Kulp. Kulp came out of the closet at the age of 67 and acknowledged she was a lesbian.
- An adult Marge looks at a poster of the 1993 romantic comedy Sleepless in Seattle.
- Patty compares the moment she met Veronica to a scene from a Hollywood movie, to what Homer says it was Bride of the Monster, a 1955 sci-fi horror film.
- Veronica is part of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA).
- Disco Stu got an annulment from Pope John Paul II for his marriage with Selma. John Paul II died just a few days after this episode aired.
- Marge finds out Veronica is a man when she sees that the toilet seat is up. The same thing happens in the 1993 comedy Mrs. Doubtfire when Christopher Hillard (Matthew Lawrence) finds out Mrs. Doubtfire (Robin Williams) is a man when he catches him standing up to pee.
- Veronica sings a couple lines of the Aerosmith song "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)". The song is part of Mrs. Doubtfire soundtrack.
- Patty calls Selma "twisted sister", such as the American heavy metal band Twisted Sister.
Trivia[edit]
- Because of the controversy over gay marriage in the United States, this episode had a Parental Discretion Advised warning before the show, the first (and so far, only) time for The Simpsons and it was rated TV-14 DLV, the sixth time for The Simpsons.
- This episode was given a PG rating with an "Adult Themes" advisory in Australia.
- Homer's printer is capable of perforating paper.
Continuity[edit]
- Julio Franco, from the episode "Three Gays of the Condo", is seen being married by Homer. His boyfriend from the episode, Grady Little, is not seen.
Goofs[edit]
- Although Homer stopped being homophobic in "Homer's Phobia" and even lived together with two openly homosexual men in "Three Gays of the Condo", he still can be seen holding a sign "Death before gay marriage".
- Reverend Lovejoy is unable to cite the book in the Bible condemning homosexuality (allegedly Genesis, Leviticus and others), yet in "Homer the Heretic", he is able to cite a completely random Bible verse of Homer's choosing from memory (Matthew 21:17).
