Cultural references
- The title of the episode is a parody of The Great Gatsby.
- Smithers stuffing himself in the dead horse is a reference to Luke Skywalker's head inside the Tauntuan's body in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.
- Milhouse posters:
- Straight Outta Compton is an album by N.W.A.
- Better Daze by 4pac is a reference to 2pac and his album Better Dayz.
- "The Family Tree of Horrorcore" references Horrorcore.
- A painting of the SS Normandie is present in the shop Marge opens.
- Homer opening voiceover, "F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote, ""There are no second acts in American lives." This is from his essay My Lost City where the line in full: "I once thought that there were no second acts in American lives, but there was certainly to be a second act to New York's boom days."
- Marge tells Homer his "heart is a big as the Ritz" which is a reference to the title of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novella The Diamond as Big as the Ritz.
- Mr. Burns references Cthulhu.
- The scene with Burns and Jay G hanging from a chandelier is a reference to the film The War of the Roses.

- The episode started fifteen minutes late due to the NFL game finishing late.
Continuity
- In Springfield Cemetery, Homer and Mr. Burns visit Burns Family Mausoleum. ("Treehouse of Horror XII")
- It is unknown as to why Mr. Burns didn't just go back to his mansion in Springfield, because only his Middle Hampton home was repossessed by Jay G (it was shown that Burns was sitting in front of his former summer mansion).
