Cultural references
- In a self-reference, one scene shows Marge criticizing a troll doll's tall blue hairdo.
- Bart sings "I'm a troll man", referencing the song "Soul Man".
- Bart struts down the street to the tune of "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees; the whole section is a reference to the movie Saturday Night Fever.
- When parents are flushing kids out of cattails and snaring some in nets, this is a reference to Planet of the Apes when Colonel Taylor and two of his fellow astronauts first encounter human life, only to be victims of an ape hunting party shortly afterwards.
- Homer seeing Bart preparing to go on his first date sings these songs: "Sunrise, Sunset", "Cat's in the Cradle" and "Yes! We Have No Bananas".
- The song during Jessica and Bart's date is Dick Dale's version of "Misirlou".
- Jessica Lovejoy being an accomplished Majorette is a reference to Pretty Poison.
- Bart says: "She is smart, beautiful and a liar, so much better than that Sarah, plain and tall.", then causing a girl, most likely Sarah, go running off crying, referencing the book Sarah, Plain and Tall.
- The song Ned Flanders sings in church is "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring".
- After Bart is accused of stealing from the church collection plate, he is forced to wear a straitjacket and mask in church, which is a reference to Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs (1991).
- Reverend Lovejoy covers his ears and sings "Bringing In the Sheaves".
Goofs
- Bart's calendar shows April has 31 days and May has 30. It's actually the other way around.
