Trivia
- This is so far the only episode to have the main cast with no "Also Starring" and no "Special Guest Voices".
- To make a scene before Homer takes his family to Mt. Useful, Swartzwelder tells Kirkland to vote for either Marge, Bart, Lisa, Grampa Simpson, Krusty the Clown, Moe Szyslak and Barney Gumble, Principal Skinner, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, Chief Wiggum, Ned Flanders, or Comic Book Guy to give Homer advice about teamwork. Then Kirkland votes for Bart.
- This marks one of the episodes where Marge Simpson, Bart Simpson, Lisa Simpson, and Maggie Simpson have supporting roles in, with Charles Montgomery Burns as the main protagonist and Homer Simpson as the deuteragonist.
- When going mad with paranoia, Mr. Burns accuses Homer of planning to kill him and use his carcass as a sled to go down the mountain. Ironically, this sort of situation would later occur in the episode King of the Hill the following season, although in that particular case, the carcass Homer used as a sled had died long before Homer was even born, let alone even arrived at the mountain top.
Cultural references
- The title is a likely reference to At the Mountains of Madness by H.P. Lovecraft.
- Smokey Bear's Catchphrase Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires is satirized as being ambiguous.
- The "political powers" Mr. Burns hallucinates seeing are Mao Zedong, Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Mahatma Gandhi and Ramses.
Continuity
- While trapped in the cabin and slowly going mad, Mr. Burns begins thinking that Homer wants to kill him so he can ride his corpse down the mountain to safety. Homer does just that in "King of the Hill", where he rides the frozen corpse of C.W. McAllister down the Murderhorn.
Goofs
- In a zoom out of the control panel, the 'Fire Drill' and 'Blimp Attack' buttons are swapped.
- Mr. Burns fires Lenny at the end of the episode. However, Mr. Burns stated the last team would be fired, so Carl should have been fired as well.
