"Married to the Blob"

The episode title is a reference to the 1988 comedy film Married to the Mob. Married to the Blob was also the title of a segment of "Treehouse of Horror XVII".
The scene with Homer and Kumiko's father after they got drunk has a parody of films by Hayao Miyazaki:
- The streets, spirits and No-Face all appear from Spirited Away.
- Otto the Catbus is from My Neighbor Totoro.
- Chief Wiggum as the Pig Person is from either Spirited Away or Porco Rosso.
- Ralph Wiggum as Ponyo from Ponyo.
- Krusty the Clown as Jigo from Princess Mononoke.
- Smithers as Aogaeru and Mayor Quimby as the River Spirit from Spirited Away.
- Patty and Selma as Kiki from Kiki's Delivery Service.
- Gerald Samson as Boh the Giant Baby from Spirited Away.
- Moe as Turnip-Head from Howl's Moving Castle.
- Database, Martin and Wendell as Kodama from Princess Mononoke.
- Kearney, Jimbo and Dolph as Haku from Spirited Away.
- The Kwik-E-Mart is a parody of Howl's Moving Castle from Howl's Moving Castle.
