Cultural references
- The episode title is a reference to the animated series King of the Hill, which aired on Fox from January 1997 to September 2009 and usually aired with The Simpsons.
- The mountain Homer climbs, The Murderhorn, is a parody of the Matterhorn.
- The Matterhorn is also parodied in the two-page comic spread Itchy & Scratchy's Holiday Wonderland!, as the Splatterhorn.
- In the untitled McBain film, McBain is working with UNICEF, a United Nations Programme that provides long-term humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in developing countries.
- The children, Homer and Ned play the game Capture the flag.
- Homer reads in his Powersauce bar that Deng Xiaoping had died. Xiaoping died over a year before the episode aired.
