• The title of the episode is a parody of The Great Gatsby.
• Smithers stuffing himself in the dead horse is a reference to Luke Skywalker's head inside the Tauntuan's body in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.
• Milhouse posters:
  • Straight Outta Compton is an album by N.W.A.
  • Better Daze by 4pac is a reference to 2pac and his album Better Dayz.
  • "The Family Tree of Horrorcore" references Horrorcore.
• A painting of the SS Normandie is present in the shop Marge opens.

• It is unknown as to why Mr. Burns didn't just go back to his mansion in Springfield, because only his Middle Hampton home was repossessed by Jay G (it was shown that Burns was sitting in front of his former summer mansion).
