- The episode title is a reference to the 1946 film It's a Wonderful Life.
- The episode's couch gag, created by Katrin von Niederhäusern and Janine Wiget, is based on Thanksgiving. The episode itself is also set during this holiday.
- The Daily iPad is a pun on The Daily Telegraph and iPad, while iPad News & World Report is a pun on U.S. News & World Report.
- Homer sings "Aloha ʻOe" by Liliʻuokalani in his sleep.
- According to Homer, his colleagues at Springfield Nuclear Power Plant elected him King Kamehameha for Hawaiian Day.
- The Thanksgiving menu on the fridge includes M&M's.
- The Hawaiian Day sign at the nuclear power plant mentions poi, the traditional staple food in the native cuisine of Hawaii.
