Ichabod Duff crossing the Duffaware River is a parody of George Washington's crossing of the Delaware River

• The title of the episode is a parody of the play Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett.
  • The title could be as well an allusion to the movie Waiting for Guffman.
• Homer says he hasn't ridden a bike since "Lance Armstrong was a good man", referring to the cyclist doping case.
• When Duffman went to the hospital, Barney remembered the time when mascots Joe Camel and Frito Bandito were removed.
• Eye drops brand Eyesine is a reference to real world drops Visine produced by Johnson & Johnson.
• The show So You Think You Can Duff? is a parody of So You Think You Can Dance?.
• Electronica artist Der Zip Zorp uses a Daft Punk-like helmet.
• The intro advert for Homer as Duffman is a parody of Game of Thrones.
• Fictional beers Blitz and Strolling Rock are parodies of Schlitz and Rolling Rock, respectively.
• When Howard K. Duff VIII is welcoming Homer to his company, he shows him a painting of his ancestor Ichabod Duff crossing the Duffaware River. This is a reference to George Washington's crossing of the Delaware River.
  • K. Duff VIII also says that his grandfather couldn't get the rights for Woody Woodpecker.

• A golf shot by Aaron Watkins is spoiled by Homer.
• The book Surviving a Blimp Fire has a cover that is very similar to the Hindenburg disaster photo taken in 1937.
• Duffman offers Howard K. Duff an Iggy Azalea CD.
• The episode was dedicated to Sam Simon who passed away on March 8th, one week before this episode aired. Part of an interview was shown during the credits at the end.

• Homer was Duffman in the comic story The Duffman Cometh!.
