Cultural references[edit]
- The episode's title is a reference to The Beatles 1966 song "Yellow Submarine".
- The typical march used in circuses "Entrance of the Gladiators" is heard during the episode's couch gag.
- Skinner's dream parodies the 1966 spaghetti Western Django as well as Quentin Tarantino 2012 film Django Unchained. The song "Skinner!" (and later "Fiddler!") has the style of Django's theme song, composed by Luis Bacalov.
- Skinner's buddy works at Old Navy, an American clothing and accessories retailing company.
- The USS Tom Clancy nuclear submarine is a reference to American novelist Tom Clancy, best known for his technically detailed espionage and military-science storylines set during and after the Cold War.
- During the film promoting the submarine ride, the submarine jumps over a dock, in a reference to the iconic scene in Free Willy, where the orca Willy (Keiko) jumps over Jesse (Jason James Richter).
- When Bart pilots his drone to outer space, the two astronauts outside a destroyed space station parody Sandra Bullock and George Clooney's characters in the 2013 science fiction thriller Gravity.
- Krusty lost part of his fortune in the Bitcoin market.
- Lisa suggests Krusty to sell foreign rights to his show, and gives the example of the sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. This sitcom was adapted in Russia, Poland and many other countries.
- As a second example, Lisa shows Krusty an Italian adaptation of SpongeBob SquarePants, named Spugna Roberto Quadrati Pantaloni.
- Men from Repo Depot take Water Lily, a 1906 painting by Claude Monet.
- The name "John Jacob Jingleheimer Chun", seen on Skinner's list of names, is a reference to the children's song "John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt".
- When the bus breaks down, Otto asks the children if anyone has a Triple A card.
- The footage of former US president Barack Obama shown when the bird press keys on the computer include:
- Obama singing a part of "Let's Stay Together" by Al Green. This occurred in one of Obama's fundraising campaigns at the Apollo Theater in New York City.
- Obama picking Ohio State University as a winner in a match against West Virginia University in the 2012 NCAA basketball tournament. Obama was famous for his love for basketball and his "Barack-etology" predictions, and was invited several times to ESPN shows starring basketball analyst Andy Katz.
- Obama saying the phrase "You can put lipstick on a pig". This phrase was said by Obama when he was criticizing the policies of John McCain, his Republican rival in the 2008 United States presidential election.
- One of the elements in the base of "Krusty's Pyramid of Laughter" is the Goofy laugh.
- Ron Rabinowitz, Krusty's agent, calls Krusty "Mr. Monday Afternoon", which is a reference to the Billy Crystal movie Mr. Saturday Night.
- Skinner listens to American financial advisor Suze Orman.
- The Jamaican Krusty includes references to the reggae and Rastafari culture in his show:
- The flag of the Ethiopian Empire, a popular symbol in Rastafarianism.
- The phrase "Rasta hey-hey, on the left-hand side" is a reference to the lyrics in the chorus of "Pass the Dutchie", a famous song by the British-Jamaican band Musical Youth.
- The Itchem & Scratchem Blow contains references to the use of cannabis, a typical ritual in Rastafarianism. The episode's title, "Rasta, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!", is also a pun on Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, 1965 American exploitation film.
- Sideshow Mao is a reference to Mao Zedong, the famous revolutionary politician of China.
- Homer is drinking Pig Gulp, a parody of the line of fountain drinks Big Gulp.
- Sound effects from Startship Enterprise from Star Trek can be heard on the USS Tom Clancy, right when Milhouse fires the "imaginary" torpedo.
- Pictures on the wall at Ron Rabinowitz's office include photos of him with media personality Paris Hilton and her dog, actor Jack Nicholson and director Ron Howard.
- Bart wants Skinner to escape to Ciudad Juárez, Mexico.

- This episode reveals the last names (and in some cases first names) of several Springfield Elementary students including Lewis, Sherri, Terri, Cosine, Report Card and Database.
Continuity[edit]
- The tagline "Yvan eht nioj" ("Join the Navy" spelled backwards) is seen during the film promoting the submarine ride. The tagline was previously seen in "New Kids on the Blecch".
- Homer says he'll need to fake his own death someday. He faked his death in "Mother Simpson".
- Krusty's custom limo seen before in "Black Widower" is reposed.
- A posit in Krusty's dressing room with a call me back message from Jay Leno (seen aiding Krusty in "The Last Temptation of Krust").
Goofs[edit]
- When Skinner crosses Wendell's name off the list, several names disappear and are replaced with Cosine Tangent, Scabies Spuckler and Sniffles Spuckler, also Hubert Wong's name suddenly appears on the list.
- In the large shot of the gym, there are duplicates of Richard, Lewis Clark and Nina Skalka visible.
- Dr. Hibbert's children are seen at the assembly, even though they go to a different school.
- On Skinner's list, the surnames of Wendell and Dolph are incorrect - respectively, "Queasy" instead of "Borton", and "Shapiro" instead of "Starbeam".
