Cultural references[edit]
- The title of the episode is a reference to the 1978 film Blood Feud.
- The song that Otto hums while cleaning his hands is "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath.
- During the Great Depress, the American government held competitions for commissions to create murals at local post offices across the country and was funded by the Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.). The main Springfield Post Office has one of these murals and it parodies The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo on the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
- When Moe answers the phone he says "Moe's Tavern, where the elite meet to drink". This is a parody to the phrase "Duffy's Tavern, where the elite meet to eat" said by Archie (portrayed by Ed Gardner) in the radio situation comedy Duffy's Tavern.
- At the mall, Mr. Burns and Smithers pass a store called The Brushes Are Coming The Brushes Are Coming, a reference to the 1966 comedy film The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming.
- At Plunderer Pete's, there is a vault with "HMS Titanic" written on it, a reference to the RMS Titanic.

- The head can also be seen in later episodes, in the corner of the Simpsons basement with the rest of the clutter.
- Homer tells Bart Aesop's Androcles and the Lion, although he gets the moral of the story horribly inaccurate and mistakingly thinks it comes from the Bible, as well as thinking the protagonist's name was Hercules.
- The episode was referenced in the question round of Bart vs. the World with two questions. Question #1: What was the rare blood type that only Mr. Burns and Bart are known to have? A: B -. B: OO-. {correct answer} C: ABC. Question #2: How did Bart save Mr. Burns' life? A: He saved him from an exposed cooling rod. B: He talked Homer out of murdering him. C: He donated blood to him. {correct answer}
- It is revealed that Smithers can play the banjo.
- Bart is allergic to butterscotch and its imitations.
