Cultural references

  • In "Attack of the 50-Foot Eyesores", there is a comical twist of the typical scenario of a tempter portrayed as a "devil on your shoulder": The devil statue destroys Springfield Elementary School, being tempted by Bart on its shoulder.
  • Wendy's: When the advertising executive tells Lisa that advertising goes away if people stop paying attention to it, she asks, "Like that old woman who couldn't find the beef?", referring to Clara Peller and the "Where's the beef?" advertising campaign.
  • Mork & Mindy: When Kang and Kodos are trying to hitch a ride to "Earth Capital", Kodos says, "Oh, shazbot" when Lard Lad's giant metal donuts rolls by them without stopping.
  • "Nightmare On Evergreen Terrace" is an obvious parody of A Nightmare On Elm Street, with Willie playing the part of Freddy Krueger.
  • Bart's dream is in the style of 1950s animated cartoons.
  • Terminator: The scene where Willie morphs into several objects in quick succession as he sinks into the sand resembles the T-1000's death scene in Terminator 2.
  • In "Homer³", when Homer is trying to explain the 3D world he is stranded in, he says "Uh... it's like... did anyone see the movie Tron?"
  • While Homer is trapped in the third dimension he says that there is so much stuff he doesn't know about astrophysics. He then goes on to say that he wishes he had read "that book by that wheelchair guy", a reference to Stephen Hawking.
  • When Homer is exploring the 3D world, he passes the library from the computer game MYST while being accompanied by music from the game.
  • The portal is similar to The Twilight Zone episode "Little Girl Lost". When Homer first encounters the portal he says "It's like something from that Twilighty show about that Zone".
  • An Utah teapot appears in the 3D world

Trivia

  • At the end of "Attack of the 50-foot Eyesores", Kent Brockman warns people watching the news about the statues coming to life in their town, "Lock your doors, bar your windows, because the next advertisement you see could destroy your house and eat your family." In "Lisa the Vegetarian", when Lisa remembers Kent eating meat during his news segment, he says the same sentence, though most of it is cut out.
  • When Homer asks if anyone has seen the movie Tron and everyone says "no", Chief Wiggum answers no twice and says yes at the end but quickly corrects himself, saying no again.
  • The computer animated sequence was animated by Pacific Data Images, which would later be renamed PDI DreamWorks and be responsible for such hits as the Shrek movies, Kung Fu Panda, and the Madagascar movies.
  • The "Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace" segment takes place on the 13th of Smarch.
  • Ironically, Willie kills children in the segment, but in "Treehouse of Horror V", he tried to save children.
  • The spider version of Willie has only six legs, whereas normal arachnids have eight.
  • The number sequence "46 72 69 6E 6B 20 72 75 6C 65 73 21", seen when Homer enters the 3D world, is ASCII for "Frink Rules!".
  • Willie in his Freddy Krueger outfit has appeared in some merchandise, however the sweater isn't striped (most likely due to copyright), the World of Springfield figure sports a plain red jumper, while in The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror Monopoly it is plain green.

Continuity

Goofs

  • In the "Nightmare of Evergreen Terrace" segment, in Bart's dream you see a shadow of what looks like someone with four knife fingers. Then when we see who it is, it is Willie holding a rake. But the rake has five tines, not four, so the shadow is wrong.
  • In the "Nightmare of Evergreen Terrace" segment, in Martin's dream, Willie emerges from the blackboard with a rake which has a wooden handle. When the shot changes the rake handle has changed to being metal.
  • When Professor Frink is explaining where Homer is, in "Homer³", Ned Flanders is leaning behind the couch between Bart and Marge, and Chief Wiggum is standing up. When Homer complains, Ned is between Marge and Chief Wiggum, who is now sitting down on the couch.
  • During the "Attack of the 50 ft. Eye Sores" segment, the family steps into the footprint of the giant donut guy to look at the label. The label should appear to be spelled backwards, but it is not.
  • In the "Nightmare at Evergreen Terrace" segment, when the children are all discussing their dreams, Ralph's sling is blue. After the shot of Principal Skinner, Ralph's sling is white.
  • When Bart decides he must engage in a showdown with Willie, a coffee mug randomly appears in the bottom left corner of the screen for a few frames.
