Cultural references
- The title of the episode is a parody of the film A Father's Will.
- Bart plays with a dissected frog and puts its intestines on its head, making it look like a Rastafari. He includes several terms when he describes the frog:
- Bart says that by examining its "Natty Dreads", he was able to deduce it was a "jammin' Rasta-frogian". "Natty Dreads" refers to the Natty Dreadlocks. "Natty Dread" and "Jamming" are also songs by Bob Marley.
- He also mentions "Pass the Dutchie", the famous song by the British band Musical Youth, and Rasta terms such as "slabba-slabba" and "Babylon".
- Marge searches for "I wonder if anyone talks about parenting online" on Oogle, a parody of Google.
- The mouse from Dr. Clarity Hoffman-Roth presentation will be in a lab at Harvard University.
- Homer eats a whole bar of cookie dough and says he is "fine" in an almost unresponsive way. Consuming raw cookie dough has increased health risks and its consumption is strongly discouraged.
- Homer sings "You're the Best" by Joe Esposito, the song from the movie Karate Kid.
- The song is heard again when Bart is motivated by the Simpson's Pocket Watch and is sung by Homer during the credits.
- Abe and Jasper Beardsley are playing chess using their medicine drugs as pieces. Abe uses "Queen's bishop Lomotil" to take "King's Ativan".
- Homer has apparently written a book titled A Father's Watch, which is the title of the episode.
- Dr. Fenton Pooltoy's "G.R.I.T." is a reference to Angela Duckworth's book Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance.[1]
- Homer mentions Sigmund Freud to Bart.
- Dumlee from the Frank Needy & Sons pawn shop is a parody of Chumlee from Pawn Stars.
- The NBA draft players include:
- Hebron James from Brandeis University, a parody of LeBron James.
- Close-up "Magic" Johnson from Brigham Old (a play-on Brigham Young) is a reference to Magic Johnson.
- Robert McLarry from the Manhattan School of Mines (there is no such school of mines in Manhattan).
- Cody Harris from Louisiana State University (LSU), possibly a reference to Joe Harris.
- DeMarcus Uncles from SUNY-Pittsburgh (a reference to SUNY and the University of Pittsburgh) is a parody of DeMarcus Cousins.
- Tzatziki Spanakopita from Panathinaikos Thessaloniki (Greece). Spanakopita with Tzatziki is a Greek pie with sauce. Panathinaikos is a club while Thessaloniki is a university in Greece.
- Hakeem Parsons from The Sorbonne.
- Abraham Lincoln Sr. from Middle Valley Western Reserve, a reference to Abraham Lincoln.
- Ralph Wiggum from Springfield Elementary.
- Jesus White from Miami of Ohio of Spain (a reference to Miami of Ohio) is possibly a reference to Earl "Black Jesus" Monroe.
- Adam Silver himself announced that the Philadelphia 76ers selected Ralph for the upcoming NBA season. Ralph, however, wears a cap with a pelican, a hint on New Orleans Pelicans.
Continuity
- All the past and present Simpsons' pets are on the couch.
- Marge searches for "I wonder if anyone talks about parenting online" on Oogle. ("The Good, the Sad, and the Drugly")
