Synopsis

"Marge comes upon a surprising windfall and, angry with Homer, spends it secretly on herself."

Plot

The family are getting ready to go to the 25th annual Springie Awards, but Homer is struggling with the neck button on his shirt. He end up accidentally swallowing the button and gestures for Marge to give him the Heimlich maneuver, which she does. Grampa comes into the room, wearing his funeral suit and the family goes to the award show. Duffman presents the show and introduces the award givers. A majority of people in town win awards, except the Simpson family. Finally, Marge wins an award for Most Underappreciated Person. However, when she accepts the award, she wakes up showing that it was all a dream.

Marge goes about her day but doesn't feel appreciated by anybody. She ends up taking Santa's Little Helper to the vet, and Bart to hospital. She also repeatedly tries to call and leave messages for Homer on his phone, but Homer doesn't receive them as Moe was using a jammer to block phone signals. While Homer, Lenny, and Carl are messing around, Homer rips his pants. When Moe breaks the jammer trying to shoot a rat, Homer gets the messages and realizes that Marge has been trying to get hold of him all day. He rushes home and Marge is angry at him for ignoring her calls. Homer then asks Marge to repair his pants before he goes to bed.

The next day, Marge is watching Trash for Cash while fixing Homer's pants. On the show, a woman sells an identical pair of Leevi's pants for $2,600. Marge then decides to tell Homer that she couldn't repair her pants and Homer wears sweatpants to work instead. Meanwhile, Marge takes Homer's pants to The Haber-Cashery where she sells them to Collectible Pants Dude for $2,595. At the Power Plant, Mr. Burns and Smithers watch Oppenheimer and Burns tells Smithers that he wants to be better than Oppenheimer. Burns takes several of his employees to the reactor core where other employees are putting small amounts of fissionable uranium around the demon core with the intention of stopping just before it hits critical mass. However, they add too much and the plant starts to go into meltdown. As everyone struggled in their bulky suits, Homer runs into the core and removes a block of uranium, stopping the meltdown. Mr. Burns then gives Homer two tickets to a baseball game as a reward.

Meanwhile, Marge is out looking for what she could spend the money on. She fells guilty about it though and goes to see Reverend Lovejoy before she goes to the Towne Centre at Springfielde Glenne. When she calls Homer to admit that she sold his pants, she hears that Homer's at a ball game and gets annoyed. Marge then goes into Spiffany's and buys the most expensive ring she can get with the money she had. However, after buying the ring, Marge starts to feel very guilty about it and tries to hide it around the house, but is never satisfied with where it is.

At Moe's, Moe tells Homer that he is selfish and ungrateful towards Marge. This leads to Homer feeling bad as he goes home. When he gets home, he finds the ring that Marge bought and gets angry. However, as he thinks about how much Marge does for him, he realizes that Marge deserves to have the ring. He slips the ring onto Marge's finger as she was asleep and tells her that he wished he had bought the ring for her to show her how much she means to him. The next day, Marge feels like she can no longer feel guilty about buying the ring. However, as she was watching the news, Kent Brockman reports that Amnesty International has declared the blue blood diamond is the most unethically mined gem. Marge then decides to only wear the ring in the house.
