Cultural references
- The episode name is a reference to the Morgan Spurlock documentary film Super Size Me.
- The episode's couch gag parodies the artwork of the album Tea for the Tillerman by Cat Stevens. The title track "Tea for the Tillerman" is heard during the couch gag as well.
- Ned has a Tom Selleck Moustache Flattener, a reference to American actor Tom Selleck, who is famous for his moustache.
- When Flanders disconnects every device in his house, he says to his kids "we pulled more plugs than a Dutch doctor". This is a reference to passive euthanasia (also known as "pulling the plug") and euthanasia in the Netherlands.
- "The Beatles bunker" is read on one of the labels at Flanders' distribution board.
- Flanders' freezer "Freezerino" was made in Okily Dokohama, Japan near Mount Fu-Gee. A reference to Yokohama and Mount Fuji.
- The music played as Marge makes the sandwiches is "The Ecstasy of Gold" from Ennio Morricone's soundtrack to The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
- Homer says he bankrupted a Pizza Hut restaurant due to its free refill policy.
- Krusty and Mr. Teeny claimed to have destroyed an Arby's, the American fast food sandwich restaurant, when it came to Springfield.
- Gil Gunderson says he was "two credits short" at Southern Illinois University.
- Homer mentions Tony Roma's, an American casual dining chain restaurant. He paraphrases it with the metaphor "Rome wasn't built in a day".
- The FOX logo appears and the FOX fanfare is briefly heard when Marge can not believe corporations only want to make money.
- The song "Money (That's What I Want)" by Barrett Strong is heard when the family is making sandwiches at Mother Hubbard's Sandwich Cupboard.
- One of the Spuckler children is named Oxycontin, such as the common drug of abuse.
- The social networks Kinterest and Critter are parodies of Pinterest and Twitter, respectively.
- Lisa orders Bart to bring a medical kit, but she calls it "one Florence Nightingale in a box". Florence Nightingale was the founder of modern nursing.
- The picnic scene is an homage to the painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat.
