- In the original airing, Milhouse mentioned the box with the infected monkey came from Pier 1 Imports. Because this joke offended the people at Pier 1, it was edited in the syndicated version to a fictional company Trader Pete's. In the DVD releases and FXX video streams, the Pier 1 reference is kept in, though the subtitles state it as Trader Pete's.

- In the Flanders house, there's a pinboard with a paper that says "1 Cor 6:9-11". Cor stands for Corinthians in the bible. The verses are: "9. Cultural references
- When Skinner calls Child Welfare, the music and graphics are a reference to the Batman TV series of the 1960s.
- Ned and Maude sing Maggie a lullaby in the style of Sonny & Cher's song "I Got You Babe".
- Homer, imitating one of Lisa's 'jazzy tunes', sings "Saxa-ma-phone" to the melody of Ludwig van Beethoven's "Symphony No. 5".
- Ned has an air horn with the melody of the "Hallelujah Chorus" from George Frideric Handel's "Messiah".
- Maggie's head turns 180 degrees a la The Exorcist. Maggie's head also spun around more than a normal range of motion in "Treehouse of Horror".
Goofs
- When Ned is going to baptise the Simpson children, Bart is wearing a white gown instead of a tux.
- When Principal Skinner burns Bart's clothes, Bart is not wearing his underwear.
- At the Flanders' house, in the kitchen, Bart and Lisa have sandwiches on plates in front of them. The shot changes and everyone on the table has an empty bowl including Bart and Lisa.
- Initially, Marge puts a purple box of Krusty Flakes near Maggie in the opening scene. The box turns green in an overhead shot of the kitchen, and is instead near Lisa in another shot.
- When Ned is warning Rod and Todd not to poke each other with sharp objects like Itchy and Scratchy, his moustache is totally smooth for a frame.
