- Matt Leinart played a Heisman Trophy Trivial Pursuit.
- When Matt let some air out of the football, it was a reference to the Deflategate scandal.
- The scene showing Grampa with his father is done in the old black and white Popeye cartoons style.
- Homer sings a version of the chorus of the Steely Dan's song "Dirty Work".
- At the end of the episode, the message "We'll miss you Vin Scully" appears, as he retired from his sports broadcaster career this year.

- The kitchen table is out of sight when Homer walks across the kitchen singing, but it reappears on the next scene.
- When Grampa tells Homer that his girlfriend is pregnant, the number on his door disappears.
