Cultural references

  • The names of two of the puppies, "Prince" and "The Puppy Formerly Known As Prince", are a reference to the musician Prince changing his stage name in the early 1990s.
  • Mr. Burns' song "See My Vest" is a parody of the song "Be Our Guest" from the Disney animated film Beauty and the Beast.
  • The episode title and plot are based on the Disney film 101 Dalmatians.
    • Burns' plan to kill the puppies and turn them into clothing references Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians, who wants to do the same thing.
    • Bart and Lisa's rescue of the puppies is based on the actions of Sergeant Tibbs and the Colonel.
    • Smithers helping Mr. Burns steal the puppies is based on Horace and Jasper.
    • When refusing Burns' offer to buy the puppies, Homer panics and asks if he's fired, referring to how in the 1996 live action remake for the film, Anita Radcliff was fired by Cruella in response to the latter's refusal to sell her the puppies.
  • The scene showing Santa's Little Helper and She's The Fastest eating spaghetti and kissing is a reference to Lady and the Tramp.
  • The clerk at the pet store performs a mind-meld on Santa's Little Helper, a reference to the Vulcan mind-meld from Star Trek.
  • Terminator: Santa's Little Helper's escape from the car (as well as the scene's music) parody the T-1000 from Terminator 2.
  • Mr. Burns says that Little Monty's trick of standing on his hind legs reminds him of Rory Calhoun.

Goofs

  • Luigi sets down spaghetti and meatballs for Santa's Little Helper and She's the Fastest, but in the shot following that, the dish and the other things on the table have moved.
  • It looks like there is nothing in the food dishes Marge sets down for Santa's Little Helper and She's the Fastest. Also, when they start eating, they just stick their heads in the bowl and keep them still.
  • 26 puppies eat from the bowls in the kitchen scene. As the title suggests, they are only meant to be 25.
    • Even worse, there are 27 puppies in Bart's sock drawer.
  • The Rich Texan's hair is mis-coloured brown.
  • At the scene in the pet shop, the animation of Santa's Little Helper is very choppy. Several times, his head cuts from looking forward to looking to the left without any in-between frames.
  • When the Simpsons are watching the dog race, there are a few frames where the bottom left curl of Marge's hair is incorrectly drawn and colored as if it was part of her head.
  • When the puppies are eating from their bowls, they are seen in a far away shot scattered throughout the kitchen. However, when the camera pans to showcase all the dog bowls, they are in a straight line.
