History[edit]
Congressman Bob Arnold, whose district included Springfield, was immediately expelled from the House of Representatives after getting caught in a sting operation where he had accepted a bribe from an undercover FBI agent to drill for oil inside Teddy Roosevelt's head on Mount Rushmore.[1]
When planning their next vacation, the Simpsons decided to go to North Dakota since it was the only state that they were allowed to enter. Bart then got excited because he wanted to see Mount Rushmore, but Lisa pointed out that the monument was in South Dakota.[2]
While driving Bart to a disciplinary camp in northern Oregon, Homer passed a sign that read, "Mount Rushmore - 20 feet out of your way!"[3]
When Otto abandoned the school bus during a field trip, Homer took over the driving and took the group to Mount Rushmore, where he explained that the Presidents' heads had been built large-sized and in stone to scare off aliens.[4]
Homer once had a political talk show, Gut Check with Homer Simpson, where one of his trademarks was going on tirades where he bemoaned the erosion of American values and warned of the possible consequences. During one tirade, he displayed a picture of Mount Rushmore, then showed the faces of the Presidents being replaced by Mao Zedong, Doctor Doom, the Ayatollah Khomeini, Patty and Selma.[5]
When the Simpson family visited Mount Rushmore, Bart vandalized George Washington's head so that it ended up looking like Krusty the Clown.[6]
The Springfield advertisement for the new statue of Jebediah Springfield showed iconic US places such as the Washington Monument seen from the Capitol (Washington, D.C.), Lincoln Memorial (Washington, D.C.), the Liberty Bell (Philadelphia), Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (Arlington) and Mount Rushmore (South Dakota).[7]
