Cultural references[edit]
- The title of the episode is reference to the phrase "Friends with Benefits", which means two friends who have a sexual relationship without being emotionally involved.
- The couch gag is a reference to the 2014 Disney short film, Feast.
- Undercover C.E.O. is a parody of the television franchise series Undercover Boss.
- At the Club Sign-Ups:
- The French Kissing Club is a reference to the french kiss.
- Children Without Phones is a parody of Children Without Worms.
- The Stolen Bicycle Society is a parody of Dead Poets Society.
- Club Meds is a reference to Club Med, a well-known hotel chain.
- Lenny mentions that thanks to crowdfunding they now have Makey Makey computers, the 3Doodler pen and Zach Braff's Wish I Was Here. In real life, Braff launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to make this film.
- Homer buys the Seat-to-Feet Lift Chair thanks to crowdfunding on a site called FriendMoocher. A website with the domain exists but it is not owned by FOX.
- The Rich Texan says he does not give handouts to poor people, and cites "Russian weirdo" Ayn Rand. Rand was known to have supported rational and ethical egoism and to have rejected altruism.
- The music heard during Seat-to-Feet Lift Chair's "funeral" is Lacrimosa from Mozart's Requiem.
- Homer and Marge mention Crocodile Dundee and its third movie Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles.
- Homer's Pechanga Casino Buffet bracelet refers to the Pechanga Resort and Casino.
- Two members of the Australian boy band are named after Australian towns: Wodonga and McQuarrie are named after Wodonga, Victoria and Port Macquarie, New South Wales respectively.
- The song played during the introduction of Harper's dad in the box is "Sirius" by The Alan Parsons Project.
- J-Cloud is a parody of iCloud.
- The Doe-Eyed Boys mention the Nobel Prize during their song "LV U 4 Ever". On a screen behind them, photos of laureates Albert Einstein, Theodore Roosevelt, Mother Teresa and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn appear.
- At the exact moment the Doe-Eyed Boys are revealed to be lip-syncing, the lyric "Girl, you know it's true" is played. "Girl You Know It's True" was a song recorded by Milli Vanilli, a duo that fell into disgrace when it was revealed they did not sing any of their songs, and was the song being "performed" when the hoax was revealed (after the vocal track skipped).
- Electronica artist Der Zip Zorp is a parody of Daft Punk. He is a special guest from the "Hasbro Channel".
- Basketball legend Sam Jones' jersey with the number 24 can be seen at the Springfield Sports Arena bar.
- The look of the Magic Palace where David Copperfield performs is like that of the Magic Castle in Hollywood.
- Mike Jambowski once traveled on the Space Shuttle.
- The bike Harper wants to give Lisa as a present has a Tiffany crystal bell.
- Homer plays some Calypso, typical music of the Caribbean Antilles.
- Bart claims that Lisa owns him a vacation in the Caribbean, and he asks for "St. Croix or better". St. Croix is one of the main islands in the United States Virgin Islands.
- The "Jambowski Island" was formerly Haiti.
- Signs on the island refer to:
- Swimming with professional swimmer Michael Phelps.
- Be in a movie with Adam Sandler. Sandler participated in some island-related films like 50 First Dates or Just Go with It.
- Making your decision with Dr. Phil.
- The mermaid at the "Mermaid Petting Zoo" is similar to Ariel from The Little Mermaid.
- Homer gets out of the ocean like Ursula Andress in the Bond film Dr. No while a snippet of the "James Bond Theme" from the film plays.
- On the beach, Homer and Harper Jambowski sing "Under the Mango Tree" from that same movie.
- The movie Back to the Future was shown on the island while the Simpsons were leaving.
Continuity[edit]
- Lisa uses Skype to call Harper. ("Moms I'd Like to Forget")
- The subliminal propaganda campaign "Join the Navy", disguised as "Yvan eht Nioj", was previously used by the Party Posse in their video "Drop Da Bomb". ("New Kids on the Blecch")
Trivia[edit]
- Doggie Heaven was previously claimed by Homer to be the place where Santa's Little Helper will go after death in "Dog of Death".
- Harper's father mentions that Jambowski island was formerly Haiti.
Goofs[edit]
- Lisa says she has to pedal backward to go forward on her bike, but in every past episode where she rides her bike, the pedals worked normally.
- When Homer, Marge and Bart are preparing for the trip, Bart is flipping a flaming stick with a brown shirt. But when Lisa comes in, Bart's shirt turns blue.
- Milhouse wouldn't be able to take Harper's bike to himself. The bike is equipped with a modern anti-theft device, so riding the bike would draw Chief Wiggum's attention and possibly get him arrested.
- The squats Homer watches on TV show incorrect form: the knees should not extend past the toes.
