Cultural references

• The episode's title is a reference to the film Apocalypse Now, which the show has referenced and spoofed many times.
• The chalkboard gag is a reference to Horton's catchphrase, "A person's a person, no matter how small", in the Dr. Seuss book Horton Hears a Who!.

• The cartoon Trans-Clown-O-Morphs is a parody of Transformers.
• Bart changes the TV channel to a golf tournament where American professional golfer Justin Leonard is playing.
  • Lisa asks Marge for a Callaway Golf Company titanium golf club.
• Homer and Bart talk about American singer and actor Dean Martin. According to Homer, a fact about Dean Martin on Wikipedia is wrong, and will be corrected later.
• Martin is driving a combine harvester for the 4-H club, a real-world youth club focused on farming.
• Bart drives the harvester to the tune of the theme song of the Western The Comancheros, composed by Claude King.
  • While driving the harvester, Bart passes over a pile of manure and turns it into DVDs of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. This is a reference to the film's not-so-positive critical response.
• Bart endorses a farm subsidy check from the United States Treasury for crops he didn't grow.
• When organizing the farm, Mary Spuckler uses some terms related to chickens, including: Pullet (a young female chicken less than a year old), Bantam (any small variety of chicken), Orpington (a breed of chicken), Leghorn (a breed of chicken originating in Tuscany). The term Flemish Giant Mary mentions corresponds to a rabbit breed, not a chicken.
• The piece "Dream March and Circus Music" from The Red Pony, composed by Aaron Copland, is heard when Bart trains Lou.

• Famous Canon in D by Baroque composer Johann Pachelbel is played by the band at Cletus's farm.
• A flag of the Confederate battle is among the things Brandine Spuckler gives her daughter for the wedding.
• Mary's middle name is WrestleMania.
• Lou is taken away from Cletus' farm in a truck belonging to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

• Spiderpig is seen at the wedding.
• According to Marge, Bart "still sits in the driveway and pretends to drive the car".
• Brandine Spuckler was 13 when she married Cletus and she had already been divorced 4 times before that.
• This is the second time that Bart almost married a girl. The first was in "Little Big Girl".
• The animal sound tape Lisa played for Bart said "Tress MacNeille" on the cover and when Homer is entering the killing floor of the slaughterhouse he hears a voice say "You are now entering the killing floor", Homer then comments "Hmm, that sounds like Tress MacNeille". Tress MacNeille is a voice actress on the show who voices lots of extra-characters as well as some recurring characters such as Dolph, Agnes Skinner and Mona Simpson.
• This is the first time that Lisa has tried to trick somebody to convert to vegetarianism.
