Cultural references

• The episode's title is a pun on the American anthology comedy television series Love, American Style, which ran from 1969 to 1974 on ABC.
• The song that plays at the beginning of the episode is "L-O-V-E" by Nat King Cole.
• Bart solidifies the Tunnel of Love ride using Jell-O.
• When Homer tells Marge he'll tell her the greatest love stories of all time, Marge wonders if they are:
  • Romeo and Juliet, the famous tragedy by William Shakespeare.
  • "Arthur and Guinever", referring to King Arthur and Guinevere.
  • Brangelina, the supercouple made by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The episode aired while the couple was at the height of its popularity.

Bonnie and Clyde

• The first segment is a retelling of Bonnie and Clyde, with Marge portraying Bonnie Parker and Homer portraying Clyde Barrow.
  • Large parts of the segment were inspired by the 1967 movie Bonnie and Clyde.
• Bonnie mentions that Texas is the future home of Akeem Olajuwon.
• The actors who portray Bonnie and Clyde in the radio show are based on George Burns and Gracie Allen, who were part of the famous comedy duo Burns and Allen.
• Tommy's Guns is a reference to the Thompson submachine gun, commonly known as a Tommy Gun. This is also the type of gun the store sold.

Shady and the Vamp

Shady and the Vamp is a parody of Disney's Lady and the Tramp. Its iconic spaghetti scene, in which the dogs share a strand of spaghetti, is recreated at Luigi's

• The second segment of the episode is a parody of Lady and the Tramp.
• The Four Seasons, specifically the "Spring" concerto, is heard while the fleas converse.
• Luigi pours Chianti onto the dog's plate.
• The half-human dog taken into the gas chamber is a parody of Disney's character Goofy.
  • The character later mentions Disney.
• The puppies' last meal is Cycle 5, which, according to Willie, is "specially formulated for dogs with five minutes to live". Cycle 5 references General Foods' Cycle, a now-discontinued brand of dog food that included numbered varieties corresponding to a dog's age and lifestyle, such as Cycle 1 (puppies), Cycle 2 (adult dogs aged 1–7), Cycle 3 (less active or overweight adult dogs), and Cycle 4 (senior dogs).
