- In addition to the $40 prize for winning the radio contest, Homer receives a medallion with the hook-and-cross logo of the American rock band Blue Öyster Cult. Homer intends to sing "(Don't Fear) The Reaper", one of the band's biggest successes.
- Lisa mentions that, as a result of creative sentencing, former President Bill Clinton is their mailman.
- According to Moe, George W. Bush daughters Jenna and Barbara Bush visited the bar once.
- Judge Constance Harm says that she would read Hemingway if she wanted a cock and bull story. This is a reference to Hemingway's novella, The Sun Also Rises, which involves an impotent war veteran and a matador.
- When Bart is ignoring what Lisa says, one of his replies is "I know you are, but what am I?". This is a reference to the 1985 American adventure comedy film Pee-wee's Big Adventure, more specifically to its iconic scene where Francis (Mark Holton) tries to convince Pee-wee (Paul Reubens) to sell his prized bicycle.
- When Marge tells Homer that they hate Judge Constance Harm, he raises his fist in the way African-American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos did during the 1968 Olympics Black Power salute.
- "Dang Me" by Roger Miller is the song playing on the car radio at the end of the episode.
- "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" by B.O.C. is also played over the closing credits.
- Professor Frink nearly runs over Bart and Milhouse with his hover bike. The bike was first seen in "Lemon of Troy".
