- When Homer opens his own bar in his garage and has R.E.M. in to play, they perform "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)".
- As Homer sings his own version of the song, he mentions Herman Munster and Cheetos. He also mentions "Leonid What's-his-name," referring to Leonid Brezhnev who himself is mentioned in R.E.M.'s song.
- Homer, Lenny, Carl, and Barney sing a short song to the tune of Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'n' Roll".
- Swigmore University, which Moe visits in the episode, is a parody of Skidmore College.
- The professor working at Swigmore University is based on Professor Charles W. Kingsfield, Jr. from the television series The Paper Chase.
- The monitors showing eyeballs are based on similar decorations found in the elevators in the St Martin's Lane hotel, where the Simpsons' staff hosted a Simpsons festival.
- The doorman in front of M was modeled after special effects creator and actor Greg Nicotero.
- The dance that Homer, Carl and Lenny perform in Moe's bar is a takeoff on the dancing in the comedy/drama film Coyote Ugly, in which the dancers performed on the bar counter.
- As Moe crosses the campus, he passes a student with a six-pack of Duff Beer under his arm, a student with a backpack full of bottles and a student juggling bottles, a reference to Cocktail.
- Homer and his friends dance to "Wooly Bully" by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs" and then dance to Chicago's "Colour My World".
- Homer hitting the jukebox to change song is similar to how Fonzie changes the jukebox in Happy Days.
- Moe mentions he saw the movie Ironweed.
- When Homer mentions the Morlocks, it is a reference to the novel The Time Machine by H. G. Wells.
- For unknown reasons (possibly by mistake), this episode is referred to as "Homer to the Moe" on Disney+.
- The Chinese satellite has a roof shaped like a pagoda.
- At the end of Homer's story he mentions that he is king of the Morlocks. Carl later corrects him by saying that Morlocks are from the future
- The gates at Swigmore University are swinging saloon doors. The clock reads "No drinking before 5:00" but all the numbers on the clock are 5s.

- Numerous video screens depicting volcanoes, eyeballs and opening flowers.

Continuity[edit]
- In the background of Homer's garage bar, the pinball machine Devil's Advocate is seen. ("Insane Clown Poppy")
- Moe tells Homer that he doesn't serve Duff at his new bar, only a Malaysian beer made from soya sauce. However, when Moe introduces Formico to his regulars, the Malaysian beer turns into a green labelled bottle of duff.
- At the end of the episode, Homer puts a tip in the jar. After the screen pans back, the jar is empty.
- In the last scene, Homer isn't wearing a tie in one shot but is wearing his pink tie when he goes to put a tip in the jar.
