Cultural references[edit]
- The episode title is a pun on the 1937 American adventure drama fantasy film Lost Horizon and the telecommunications company Verizon, reflecting the central role that telecommunications play in the episode.
- During the couch gag, the Simpsons are depicted carved into rock in a parody of Mount Rushmore.
- Agnes Skinner sarcastically compares Seymour to John D. Rockefeller, the American businessman.
- Principal Skinner crosses the freeway in a similar fashion to the video game Frogger.
- The Allied Peas mascot is a parody of the Jolly Green Giant.
- Lisa wants to visit Machu Picchu, Peru.
- The song playing when Bart is collecting golf balls is "Workin' Man Blues" by Merle Haggard.
- When Denis Leary takes a long time to make his shot, Krusty makes a pun combining a golf tee and the Boston Tea Party. Leary also began working as a comedian in Boston, and is seen wearing a Boston Red Sox cap.
- Denis Leary mentions the fact that he voiced the saber-toothed tiger Diego in the 2002 animated film Ice Age.
- Thanks to one of Bart's pranks, Leary appears in the film adaptation of the children's book Everybody Poops as a constipated gorilla. The film is shot in Tunisia, a renowned international film location, famous for its Saharan landscapes and unique Berber architecture.
- Bart plans to spend Denis Leary's money on New York Yankees hats and Derek Jeter jerseys. Leary, however, is a known Boston Red Sox fan, whose team has a long-standing rivalry with the Yankees.
- The bars Bart makes prank calls to include:
- After Bart finishes prank calling, he remarks that "The sun never sets on the Bartish Empire" a reference to the phrase "The sun never sets on the British Empire".
- Dolls of Don Mattingly can be seen among the Yankees stuff ordered by Bart.
- When Bart speaks with Leary on the phone, the show Bart says was "cancelled" refers to the 2001 sitcom The Job, which lasted 19 episodes. Soon after, the show Bart says was "going to get cancelled" refers to Rescue Me, another Denis Leary series in which several of the principal actors from The Job later went on to star in.
- Denis Leary eats Pop-Tarts.
- The song "Watch Your Step" by Elvis Costello is heard when Bart is being tracked by Marge.

peterson's-guide-to-north-american-birds.com is based on Peterson Field Guides, a popular and influential series of American field guides intended to assist the layman in identification of birds. The species seen on the website include:
- At Machu Pichu, Homer mentions Ecuador and has developed an addiction for coca leafs. Coca leaves are traditionally chewed to help with breathing and stamina, especially at high altitudes.
- Homer mentions Wirakocha, which is based on Viracocha (also spelled "Wiraqocha"). Wiraqocha is the creator and supreme deity in the pre-Inca and Inca mythology.
- During the flashback scene at Machu Picchu, the city's soldiers flee in panic from the conquistadores in a The Three Stooges-style. The last one to flee whoops like Curly Howard as he runs away.
Continuity[edit]
- In one scene, the satellite is on the right of the roof of the Simpsons' house, then several scenes later, it is on the left side. Also, the first time the satellite is seen, it is bigger.
- Kent Brockman appears with brown hair at The Krusty Klassic Celebrity Pro-Am golf tournament.
- In the scene in Bart's bedroom when Lisa holds the Krusty phone, the back of Krusty's neck keeps changing color from yellow to white.
- In this episode, Bart doesn't have a phone. This contradicts a threat by Marge in the episode "Milhouse of Sand and Fog".
