"Heartbreak Hotel" is the second episode of season 30 of The Simpsons and the six-hundred and forty-first episode overall. It originally aired on October 7, 2018. The episode was written by Renee Ridgeley and Matt Selman and directed by Steven Dean Moore. It guest stars George Segal as Nick and Rhys Darby as Tag Tuckerbag.
Synopsis
- "Marge and Homer's marriage is tested when they travel to a tropical island to compete for a million dollars on Marge's favorite reality competition show."
Plot
The Simpson family is watching TV, watching the finals of The Amazing Place, hosted by Tag Tuckerbag, and Bart and Lisa insist to Marge and Homer to go participate in the next season, and when she had enough, after telling her kids to "can it", she shows them their tryout for the show in the past.
Lisa edits out a video from them, and at Springfield Squidport, the tryouts are held and Bart and Lisa brings them their parents' tryout, unknown to them, with Marge opening all the rejection letters. At home, Marge opens the mail and finds out with Homer that they were selected.
Unfortunately for them, at the first trial, #SuitcaseStowaway, they lose and get #Shelliminated, only to find out they can't leave till the 6 weeks of the show are recorded, so no one will know at home who won, and they'll stay at the Courtyard by Airport hotel, having to hide from everyone the truth, even Bart and Lisa.
While Marge is destroyed from being away from home, Homer is happy on all the accommodations they give them. Homer manages to change her mind, while the kids are digging out a pool at home, but when they find the post production room, Marge discovers Homer found her stuff but instead of winning, he ate a chocolate bar and gets mad.
In a black and white setting, Marge and Homer meets the 5th week eliminated couple, where Marge makes Homer jealous, just before the next day, a couple can re-enter the show, but only if they switch partners with another couple, the #DeadWeightDrop, to compete in #MangoTango, and Marge chooses Nick.
Marge however is the one that screws up next, forgetting to salt the rims of the glasses, and they get back home, where Homer repeats Marge's screw up speech on loop. Afterwards they end the day watching Anger Watkins and Skip Angry's Anger vs. Angry.
Production
The episode was supposed to air in season 29 but it was postponed to season 30, as "Flanders' Ladder" was set to be the season 29 finale.[1][2] The episode is a satire of The Amazing Race. Marge and Homer are a couple who go on the show and immediately lose.[3][4]
Matt Selman claims that the inspiration of the episode was feeling bad for the first person to be kicked off Top Chef every year.[5] The Who's Afraid of the Virginia Woolf? parody came from co-writer Renee Ridgeley.[6] The producers tracked down George Segal to voice Nick a week before the episode aired because he had said that Virginia Woolf was his favorite movie he was ever in.[7]
