Cultural references
- The episode title is a pun on the 1969 Disney movie The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, which was remade into a TV movie in 1995, starring Kirk Cameron. Dan Castellaneta was also in the remake as Alan Winsdale.
- The episode is both a parody of, and an homage to, the 1960s TV series The Prisoner. Patrick McGoohan voices Number 6 in the episode, reprising his character from The Prisoner. (In the episode, "The Village" has been replaced by "The Island".)
Trivia
- The woman presenting the Pulitzer never mentioned the category in which Homer won the prize.
- After Homer stole Number 6's boat, Number 6 says that this is the third time this has happened. He said earlier that it took 33 years to build the boat, which means that Number 6 has been on The Island for at least 99 years, if it took him just as long to build the previous two boats.

Goofs
- Near the new pool, there is a guy with the words "City Worker" on the back of his blue shirt putting finishing touches on a statue. He is using cement from a bag labeled POTHOLE CEMENT. Later, when we see people repairing the pothole, they are wearing orange jump suits, and the stuff they are filling the hole with is most definitely tar.
- When Homer enters his URL to show the family his page, all the keys he types are function keys, control keys, and numeric keypad keys—but no letters.
- In an early shot we see no lamp but a few minutes later we see a red lamp.
- When Homer has the computer in the kitchen it has a can holder and other features. But when he is using it on the sofa it has none of those features on it.
- Also, when the screen closes up on Homer, the trash can is near the table, then it gets closer by the table.
- Lenny was poor in "Realty Bites"; he shouldn't be able to have a computer.
- Lenny could have come into some money.
- It sounds like they sent the plant closure e-mail to everyone's home, rather than work address.
- Homer brought home a different computer than he bought.
- Comic Book Guy should know Mr. X is Homer, as his face is seen briefly on his computer before it is covered.
- The fact that Homer visited his site after the counter was installed should guarantee one hit, yet it is on 0000.
- Mrs. Krabappel's voice is way, way off.
- Real web counters don't go down - they're a count of how many people have visited the site, not how many are on at one time.
- One of the Squishee machines behind Apu in at least the fake Kwik-E-Mart is labelled "green" and is distinctly yellow.
Continuity
- The computer salesman says one of his computers is the kind astronauts use to do their taxes and Homer says, "I was an astronaut!" The salesman doesn't believe him, but Homer was actually an astronaut during the episode "Deep Space Homer".
- In Marge Simpson Living Marge reminds Homer that he has tried snowplowing ("Mr. Plow"), webhosting ("The Computer Wore Menace Shoes"), trucking ("Maximum Homerdrive"), fortune cookie writing ("A Hunka Hunka Burns in Love"), cartoon voiceovers ("The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show"), food critic ("Guess Who's Coming to Criticize Dinner?"), screen writer ("Beyond Blunderdome"), mixologoist ("Flaming Moe's"), bootlegger ("Homer vs. the Eighteenth Amendment") and astronaut ("Deep Space Homer") when he was searching for a new job.
