Cultural references

  • The episode title is a pun on the novel Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad.
  • Part of the episode is a parody of the Alfred Hitchcock movie Rear Window starring Jimmy Stewart. A Jimmy Stewart look-alike also shown looking back at Bart through a telescope and later yells out for "Grace" and the other star of Rear Window is Grace Kelly.
  • When the statues in the Springfield Wax Museum melt, among them are the original cast of M*A*S*H.
  • When Ned walks upstairs carrying the axe, he is singing "Mary Had a Little Lamb".
  • The first Klassic Krusty episode is dated February 6, 1961. Krusty's guest was AFL-CIO chairman George Meany.
  • On the Krusty show, both the host and guest are smoking. This happened on interview shows in the 1960's.
  • The song Martin sings at the end of the episode is "Summer Wind" by Frank Sinatra.

Trivia

  • Nelson says that the epidermis is the hair when actually, it's the outer layer of the skin. This could be put down to Nelson being uneducated about it.
  • An image of Bart spying people with the telescope become part of an internet meme template.

  1. Main title
  2. "Marge, can you set the oven to cold?"

Goofs

  • Hans Moleman's cane switches hands, and his cane disappears.
  • While in the tent, Bart is seen wearing shoes along with his underwear. Out of the tent, he isn't.
  • The treehouse ladder disappears in one scene, and switches sides a couple of times.
  • Bart's door is already wide open, yet when Lisa enters the room, we hear the sound of a door opening.
  • Everybody can stand up in the pool, yet it's too tall for Lisa to get out when it's empty.
  • As Bart watches Lisa walk by the rolltop desk in the Flanders home, it is already open. A few scenes later, we see Lisa opening it.
  • The portable TV in Bart's room disappears.
  • In the scene where Lisa runs into the attic as she dives behind the chest, she rattles a bird cage, later when Ned faints, you can see that the bird cage has disappeared.
  • When Bart is watching Rod and Todd walk over to Ned Flanders, you can see their reflections on Bart's telescope. Their reflections do not match their actual positions.
  • When Dr. Hibbert is seen in Bart's telescope, the people in the pictures don't have faces.
  • When Bart looks at the universe, we see Earth even though that should be impossible, being on Earth.
  • When Richard throws a beach ball at the camera, he has dark skin and black hair.
  • When Marge and Homer swim naked in the pool, the dress hanging on the pool's edge has straps even though Marge's dress is normally strapless.
  • As Bart adjusts the aim of his telescope, a white-colored section of the telescope turns black for a frame.
  • In the widescreen version of the episode, as seen on Disney+, Matt Groening's name is misspelled as "Matt Gorening" in the Executive Producer credits.

Continuity

  • A mobile swimming pool (this one in a dump truck) also appears in the comic story Carpool Party.
