Cultural references
- The episode title is a pun on the novel Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad.
- Part of the episode is a parody of the Alfred Hitchcock movie Rear Window starring Jimmy Stewart. A Jimmy Stewart look-alike also shown looking back at Bart through a telescope and later yells out for "Grace" and the other star of Rear Window is Grace Kelly.
- When the statues in the Springfield Wax Museum melt, among them are the original cast of M*A*S*H.
- When Ned walks upstairs carrying the axe, he is singing "Mary Had a Little Lamb".
- The first Klassic Krusty episode is dated February 6, 1961. Krusty's guest was AFL-CIO chairman George Meany.
- On the Krusty show, both the host and guest are smoking. This happened on interview shows in the 1960's.
- The song Martin sings at the end of the episode is "Summer Wind" by Frank Sinatra.
Trivia
- Nelson says that the epidermis is the hair when actually, it's the outer layer of the skin. This could be put down to Nelson being uneducated about it.
