Cultural references[edit]
- The title of this episode is a reference to the film The Last Temptation of Christ directed by Martin Scorsese.
- The name of the store All Creatures Great and Cheap is a play on All Creatures Great and Small.
- According to Jay Leno, American actor Spencer Tracy called Krusty "the most promising newcomer of 1959".
- Janeane Garofalo mentions Swanson's TV dinners.
- "Bubbles in the Wine" from The Lawrence Welk Show is heard while Krusty is getting drunk in several bars.
- "El Disco" by Daryl Runswick is heard on the TV show Marge and Lisa are watching.
- Bart's Comedy Jam is a parody of the TV series Def Comedy Jam.
- Krusty refers to the "Headlines" segment of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno as "some big-chin schlub reading typos from the Palookaville Post."
- Krusty mentions Redd Foxx.
- Krusty's return to the underground comedy scene may be considered an homage to George Carlin, Lenny Bruce and Bill Hicks, known for their harsh, cynical comedy material in which they frequently criticized corporate America. Numerous parallels between the two can be drawn, such as Krusty adopting an all-black wardrobe (similar to Hicks and Carlin), and his more cynical, truth-driven material.
- In one of his stand-ups, Krusty says that Winston Churchill would never eat at Der wienerschnitzel, an American fast food chain specialized in hot dogs.
- Java the Hut is a pun on Star Wars villain Jabba the Hutt.
- The lettering on the coffeehouse's sign is similar to the typeface in the Star Wars logo.
- Java is also a programming language, whose logo is a cup of coffee inspired by the Java coffee from Indonesia.
- Krusty says the Canyonero is the "Cadillac of automobiles".
Goofs[edit]
- When Lisa removes her shoe, she has three toes instead of four.
- After Krusty's audience is inspired to burn its money, Ms. Hoover's nose repeatedly turns black.
