Cultural references

  • The song that the carollers sing is "The Little Drummer Boy" by Katherine Kennicott Davis.
  • The video game Bonestorm is based on the Mortal Kombat series.
  • Famous video game characters that appear to Bart include Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Lee Carvallo, and Sonic the Hedgehog. Of the five, Lee Carvallo is the only one that tried to talk Bart out of shoplifting. In addition, Mario and Luigi's body shapes are reversed and Donkey Kong lacks a tie, resembling his original appearance from his debut in Donkey Kong.
  • The episode features Allan Sherman's song, "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh", played on the answering service in lieu of Don Brodka's message about catching Bart shoplifting.
  • Among the games seen at Try-N-Save, a number of them reference pop-culture:
  • The episode also mentions rapper and actor Tupac Shakur.
  • Many clues point to the fact that Bonestorm is a game released for the Sega Mega Drive (Sega Genesis in North America).
    • The console which plays Bonestorm uses cartridges.
    • The boxes are snap-open video cases, unlike the Super Nintendo's plain boxes, and the Sony PlayStation's jewel cases.
    • The graphics for the game are rather blocky, just like video game consoles of the time.
    • In the commercial at the beginning, it shows that there is blood in the game. The Sega Mega Drive version of "Mortal Kombat", which Bonestorm is based, shows blood (only through a cheat code, but still. The Super Nintendo version of Mortal Kombat never had blood either, so it is likely that it isn't in the Super Nintendo of Bonestorm, if any, either.
  • Marge says "Well, life is like a box of chocolates. You never know... (Bart makes noises) ... what you're gonna get.". This is a reference to the quote "Mama always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get." from the movie Forrest Gump.
  • The store store detective says "I'm afraid your son broke the 11th commandment: Thou shalt not steal." That's actually the 8th commandment.
  • Peanuts: When Bart imagines what Christmas would be like in Juvenile Hall, the Christmas tree seen in the background looks just like Charlie Brown's from A Charlie Brown Christmas.
  • Homer tells Bart about the Police Academy films and impersonates "that guy, that makes sound effects" (Michael Winslow).

Goofs

  • Maggie appears in every Christmas photo even though she is just one year old.
  • The game Cfelbrity Tutopsy should be "Celebrity Autopsy". This is most likely an animation error.
