Cultural references

  • The theme music from The Mary Tyler Moore Show plays as Bart moves into his apartment. After the music finishes, Bart tosses his cap into the air, similar to Mary Richards tossing her hat into the air during MTM's opening sequence, except that Bart's cap is destroyed by a ceiling fan.
  • The scene in which Homer is sitting at his computer with a large glass of whiskey, watching Bart on the live feed from Tony Hawk's webcam, and says "Of all the sites, on all the web, I had to click onto his..." is a reference to a classic scene in the film Casablanca, in which Humphrey Bogart's character, Rick, sits at a table in his bar, drinking a large glass of whiskey, and says "Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine...". The music that starts playing at the end of Homer's line is "As Time Goes By", which is played several times in Casablanca, including during the aforementioned scene.
  • The "leave the parents" trial may be based on the movie North.
  • The "Furbys" that Marge tells to Homer to get rid of it are actually produced puppets and their "turned feral" is reminiscent of the Gremlins movie.
  • The devil appearing while Lisa is reading a book is a reference to the Faust.
  • What Bart does at the table with his plate and food is a double movie quote "
  • The term "loft", the place that Bart has rented as a place to live, refers to an abandoned industrial open space whose urban restructuring activity has become very fashionable in large cities since the 1980s.
  • The advertisement "Absolut Krusty" that you see on the wall of the building where Bart lives is a reference to the vodka brand "Absolut Vodka" and its campaign of artistic collaborations and creative promotions linked to the brand started over the years 80.
  • The skate encounter between Tony Hawk and Homer and a quote from the sword fighting scenes from the movie Hero with background music played with Zhangu Chinese drums that often accompanies these scenes.

Trivia

  • This episode was advertised to be the 300th episode of The Simpsons, but was the 302nd episode to air.
    • This fact is referenced by Marge during the scene at the skate park. When Marge comments about not being able to count many crazy things Homer has done, Lisa claims that it's 300. Marge then remarks that she could have sworn it was 302, only for Lisa to nervously shush her.
  • When Bart watches the video of the Baby Stinkbreath commercial, he states to Lisa that he didn't remember being in a commercial. Then he pulls out a Butterfinger and eats it. This is a reference to the old Butterfinger adverts The Simpsons used to be in.
  • The tree that Bart and Milhouse sit under appears to be the Lemon Tree from "Lemon of Troy"; however, it is missing the lemons (implying the tree is not in season).
  • The meaning of the writing that Bart makes on his arm with the marker (Mr. Awesome) is "a guy or girl that is basically succeeding at everything that a person is supposed to be, according to social expectations" and is congruent with what's happening to Bart.[1]
  • The name of Cletus and Brandine's daughter (exchanged for Homer's sugar packet) "Condoleezza Marie" is a reference to Condoleezza Rice (Former US Secretary of State) whose name is unique in the world because she was a Italian word badly registered by the clerk of the registry when she was born.

Goofs

  • Bart is clearly living on the top floor of the loft building (as indicated by the pan-in from the Absolut Krusty mural painted on the building's exterior), but when he panics and takes the elevator to escape the rat in his room, the elevator takes him up - numerous flights - and opens at Tony Hawk's pad.
