Cultural references[edit]

  • Sideshow Bob's prison number in this episode is A113. A113 is a famous Easter egg Brad Bird puts in his movies and films, such as this one, all the Pixar films, two other Simpsons episodes ("Krusty Gets Busted" and "Cape Feare"), and many other films and cartoons.
  • An Alien appears in Hanger 18. This is a reference to the Roswell NM UFO crash in the '40s, where it was said that the aliens and spaceship parts were held in Hanger 18 of the Wright-Pattrsoin airforce base.
  • At one point, Milhouse plays with the cockpit of an F-15 and tries to act like he is blasting his mom, dad, and Sally Waxler out of anger that he had to be sent to a psychiatrist. According to the DVD Commentary, this scene was what inspired them to create "A Milhouse Divided", the episode where his parents divorced.
  • After Sideshow Bob demands that all TV must go, Dr. Hibbert says "Surely he doesn't mean VH1".
  • As Sideshow Bob loads the bomb, he whistles the World War II-era song, We'll Meet Again.
  • The Enola Gay referred to by Sideshow Bob imitating Colonel Hapablap, is the name of the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

Goofs[edit]

  • Lisa says that helium changes one's voice. However, that is only achieved if helium is absorbed into one's vocal cords. Mere insufflation of helium, as was the case with Sideshow Bob hiding inside the blimp, is too weak to cause the well-known effect. This is shown when the blimp deflates and covers Lisa, her voice does not become higher.
  • When Sideshow Bob first shows his evil plan on the Jumbo-Vision, his voice is only mildly higher pitched, compared to later in the episode when the helium affects Sideshow Bob's voice. This is first referenced when the guard says, "I hate that guy and his stupid high-pitched voice."
  • Homer drinks six Duff beers that cost $6 for one. Yet the man charges him for $48.00, which is only possible if he drank eight.
  • Bart doesn't have a backpack when he enters the Duff blimp. Soon, he does.
  • When Maggie is seen on the big TV, Homer waves his hand in front of her and doesn't lean too far. Then it is revealed Bart and Lisa is in between Homer and Marge (who has Maggie on her knee). So Homer couldn't put her hand in front of Maggie.
  • When Martin and the other nerds parade with the box kites, Cosine has red hair.

Movie moments[edit]

  • Colonel Hapablap shouts "Sideshow Bob, what is your major malfunction?!" a la Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (also played by R. Lee Ermey) in Full Metal Jacket.

Trivia[edit]

  • The episode is called "S is for Sideshow Bob" when it shows on Sky1.
  • According to the episode commentary, Kelsey Grammer had trouble keeping himself from laughing at the "Chuck Yeager's Acura" line.
