Cultural references
- The episode title is a reference to "first base" being a common slang term for kissing and to Bart's and Nikki's repeated attempts (some successful) to steal kisses from each other.
- The Itchy & Scratchy Show segment features a parody of the 1982 movie Koyaanisqatsi: Life out of Balance complete with time-lapse photography and musical compositions similar to Philip Glass's work.
- The vampire novel Nikki is holding while talking to Bart is called Red Moon, a parody of the Twilight series book New Moon.
- The portion of Bart's dream involving the spoof of Alien 3 is a reference to a film reviewed by Jay Sherman in The Critic.
- Michelle Obama posts comments on Lisa's blog under the username FLOTUS1, and later tells Lisa she would have used FLOTUS but it was already taken. FLOTUS is an acronym for "First Lady Of The United States".
- Some of Michelle Obama's bodyguards wear MTVs (Modular Tactical Vests) which are currently only at use with the USMC.
- Nikki's parents are modelled on Anna and Marcus from the V TV series.
- The poster "Loose Lips Sing (Scholar) Ships" is a reference to "Loose lips sink ships," whose most famous use was on propaganda posters during WWII.
Montage Kisses
Among the famous movie and television kisses that were reanimated shot-for-shot seen in the montage are from:
- From Here to Eternity
- Gone with the Wind
- Wuthering Heights
- Lady and the Tramp
- Planet of the Apes
- On Golden Pond
- Ghost
- Spider-Man
- Star Trek (2009)
- Beauty and the Beast
- The Public Enemy (Specifically, the iconic scene where James Cagney "kisses" Mae Clark with a grapefruit)
- WALL•E
- Alien 3
- The Godfather Part II
- All in the Family (episode "Sammy's Visit" when Sammy Davis, Jr. kisses Archie Bunker)
Trivia
- In Latin America, this episode was released as the 16th episode of the season for unknown reasons.
- Maggie does not appear in this episode for unknown reasons, leaving Lisa the only Simpson child to appear in every episode.
Continuity
- The other fourth grade's class teacher is Audrey McConnell from "Bart vs. Lisa vs. the Third Grade" (she was the third grade teacher for Bart and Lisa).
- This is WALL•E's second appearance in The Simpsons. The first was "The Burns and the Bees".
Goofs
- When Nikki winks at Bart, the printing on her shirt disappears.
- Michelle Obama is shown at a podium with a seal. In actuality there is no seal for the First Lady. The U.S. Constutition does not establish an Office of the First Lady. First Ladies are presidents' wives, not an elected office.
- When Lisa types her message on her blog, nothing else appears on the screen when Lisa is pressing the keys on the keyboard.
- Homer's navigation system seems to give all distances in metric measurements, much to his annoyance, except when he is suspended in the air, when it bizarrely switches to imperial and says he is 10 feet above the ground.
