"Fat Man and Little Boy" is the fifth episode of The Simpsons' sixteenth season and the last new episode of 2004.

Synopsis.

Bart fires spitballs at Lisa and Janey and one is covered in blood. Lisa then complains to Bart about it but Bart finds out he is losing his last baby tooth. Bart then starts to worry that he is becoming an adult and has to give up his life as a kid. Lisa then tells Bart that when she is feeling down she writes stuff and Bart decides to write hilarious speeches on t-shirts. They quickly become popular and Bart opens his own t-shirt stand but Chief Wiggum shuts it down and Bart tries to go to the novelty expo to increase sales. There Bart finds out that Krusty is selling better t-shirts and Bart gives up. However, a businessman named Goose Gladwell finds Bart's t-shirts and distributes them. Homer then realizes he just lost his spot in the family and ends up watching a Declan Desmond movie on TV. The movie then tells Homer instead of moving to the Springfield Retirement Castle he can spend time with Lisa. Homer enjoys spending time with Lisa but after Lisa's project on nuclear energy is about to lose to Martin's robot brother named CHUM and Homer uses real plutonium to power Lisa's project and Lisa begins to hate Homer again. In the mean time Goose Gladwell is selling the rights to Bart's t-shirts to the Disney company and Bart is not even given a single penny. Homer then comes to the store and after a discussion with Goose Homer is able to end sales to Bart's t-shirts and Homer is able to reprise his role as father again. During the credits Bart tells Nelson there is more than one way to remove a tooth.

Trivia

  • What Homer did is similar to what Boy Scout David Hahn did in 1994.
  • Among the items in Goose's store are a 8-ball fortune teller and a Star Destroyer model.
  • There are no holiday decorations in the power plant or the Simpson home, and no snow to be seen. This indicates that Smithers' line "It's Christmas, sir" may have been a last-minute addition when it was noted that the episode was slated to air around Christmas.
  • When Homer is stealing the Plutonium from the power plant, the Pink Panther theme song plays. The final note plays when Lisa opens the basement door.
  • Before the episode first aired, Matt Groening registered the domain nuclear-secrets.com, but never created a website.
  • Bart's Toys:

Cultural References

  • The episode is named after the two nuclear bombs that were dropped on Japan during World War II, codenamed Fat Man and Little Boy.
  • The eccentric Goose Gladwell seems to be a parody of Willy Wonka; this episode was released six months before the 2005 movie, though Gladwell's appearance is based more on the 1971 version. Homer also makes a reference to strange adults befriending small children, which is possibly a reference to Michael Jackson, who was acquitted of child molestation charges about the same time the Depp film hit theaters.
  • Songs used:
    • Get Ready For This by 2 Unlimited
    • "Dust in the Wind"
    • The Pink Panther theme
    • I'm Too Sexy by Right Said Fred
  • In The Simpsons Game, Matt Groening calls Homer and Bart a "Fat Man" and a "Little Boy".
