Playdate with Destiny is an animated short film starring Maggie Simpson. The short aired from March 6, 2020 onwards before showings before the Pixar film Onward.[1][2] It was released on Disney+ on April 10, 2020.

Plot[edit]

Marge takes Maggie to the Not Responsible for Injuries Park to play. Maggie gets left at the bottom of a slide where a kid slides down. A baby then pulls Maggie out of the way just as the baby on the slide was about to hit Maggie. Maggie becomes instantly smitten with her rescuer, who then reveals his name to be Hudson. Maggie and Hudson then spend the day playing together, imagining themselves to be in fancier locations. As Maggie and Hudson were playing peek-a-boo with each other, Hudson disappears as he is taken home by his mother. Hudson and Maggie say goodbye to each other.

That night, Maggie dreams about Hudson and realizes that she likes him. The next day, Maggie gets ready to see Hudson again, choosing which diaper to wear and puts on baby powder. However, Homer takes her to the park instead and they go to Broken Ankle Park, the wrong park. Maggie spends the day trying to get back to Hudson but Homer grabs her and takes her home just as she sees him.

Maggie falls into a downward spiral after this, drinking milk and feeling depressed. The next morning, Marge gets Maggie ready to go and play again, which makes Maggie happy, until Homer takes her again. As Homer was driving past Not Responsible for Injuries Park again, Maggie grabs the wheel and turns it, heading back for the park. As they pull into the car park, Maggie notices that Hudson is on a train. She runs towards the train station and Hudson rushes to the back of the train to meet her. Hudson holds out Maggie's bow and Maggie grabs it, but Hudson lets go as the train gets too fast. Maggie sits down, depressed again, until she hears the train come back round. Hudson, who is now on the front of the train, grabs Maggie and pulls her onto it with her. Maggie and Hudson lean in, looking like they're going to kiss, but put pacifiers in each others mouths instead.

Production[edit]

After Tom Gammill and Max Pross wrote "The Incredible Lightness of Being a Baby", James L. Brooks thought they could turn the part of the story about Maggie's relationship with Hudson into a theatrical short. Whilst the short was being worked on, "The Incredible Lightness of Being a Baby" was delayed.[3] "The Incredible Lightness of Being a Baby" was later scheduled to air on April 19, 9 days after Playdate with Destiny released on Disney+.[4]
