Cultural References

The story is replete with movie and TV references.

  • Back to the Future:
    • Marty McFly and a girl who identifies herself as his "clone-daughter" are riding on hoverboards.
    • The town they are in resembles the Hill Valley of 2015, as seen in Back to the Future Part II.
    • A movie theatre is showing Finding Nemo 19, a reference to the Hill Valley theatre showing Jaws 19.
    • When Snake steals Marty's bitcoins, he is dressed like Griff Tannen.
  • Chief Wiggum's "Future Cop" uniform looks like a Street Judge from Judge Dredd.
  • Transformers: Wiggum's rifle/partner "Officer Shooty" can transform into a flying robot.
  • When Shooty arrests Snake and reads him his rights, he says, "If you are in space, you have the right to have no one hear you scream", a reference to the tagline from Alien.
  • At Future Police Headquarters:
    • Wiggum's boss is Police Commissioner Zordon, a pun on Commissioner Gordon from Batman.
    • Zordon is a head floating in a jar, a possible reference to Futurama.
    • An anti-drug poster reads "Talk to your kids about Nuke", which was the drug being produced and sold by the villain's gang in RoboCop 2.
    • Another poster reads "This is your brain. This is your brain on Tek.", a reference to the "This is Your Brain on Drugs" TV and poster advertising campaign of the 1980s.
  • Planet of the Apes: When Shooty has the weekend off, Wiggum is partnered with an ape named Officer Cornelius.
  • Wiggum and Cornelius pull George Jetson over for "[ejecting] his son from a flying vehicle", in spite of George's protests that he was dropping him off at school, a reference to the opening sequence of The Jetsons where George does indeed drop Elroy off at school by ejecting him (safely, in a floating bubble) from his air car.
  • Soylent Green: A storefront advertises "Discount Soylent".
  • Wiggum and Cornelius later arrest Charlie Chan for littering (leaving origami cranes in the street).
  • Blade Runner: A man with a gun chases another man down the street, yelling "You're a replicant!" at him. The man being chased yells back, "I know you are, but what am I?", a reference to the controversy about whether Deckard is a human being or a replicant.
  • Star Wars: Wiggum and Cornelius eat at a restaurant called Do Or Donut, a reference to Yoda's "Do or do not" catchphrase. Also, the restaurant has on its roof a statue of Yoda levitating a giant donut.
  • RocoCop: Wiggum's ex-partner Murphy shows up at Do Or Donut and starts an argument with Cornelius. Wiggum calms Murphy down and Murphy walks away, upset, with an ED-209 droid with whom he seems to be friends.
