Cultural references
- The episode title is a reference to the 1962 nonfiction book Black Like Me, written by John Howard Griffin.
- Lego Homer says of Maggie, "They're so cute when they're Duplo", a reference to Lego Duplo, a line of Lego bricks designed for very young children.
- Homer looks at a Perky Patty's Princess Shop playset and Comic Book Guy asks if he is an AMFOP, short for "Adult Male Fan of Princesses". This is a reference to adult male fans of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, who are collectively referred to as Bronies.
- When Bart rebuilds Springfield Elementary School to suit his own taste, among the features he adds are Terminator gym teachers.
- Bart combines several playsets to build a giant robot and Comic Book Guy calls it a "mis-setgenation", a wordplay on "miscegenation", an old-fashioned, negative term for the mixing of racial groups.
- Comic book guy was turn his face to the bad guy face. That was reference to The Lego Movie where the bad cop was usually turn his face either good or evil emotion.
- The Lego Movie is referenced When Homer wakes up he says "I dreamed I was in a world where everything was made of Lego and received lessons in fatherhood". Lisa then says "Didn't they do that in-?". Homer says "No this is a new plot". Then Emmet and Wyldstyle from The Lego Movie' make a cameo appearance at the Brick-Stock convention show (an Lego event which is located at The Suites)
- An orange Brick remover appears in the first Church of Springfield.
Continuity
- Superintendent Chalmers and Lunchlady Dora are seen making out in the broom closet, it was mentioned that they were dating in the comic story "The "X" Men".
- Principal Skinner and Mrs. Krabappel were also caught in the janitor's closet together in "Grade School Confidential".
