Cultural references
- The episode title is a reference to the 1962 nonfiction book Black Like Me, written by John Howard Griffin.
- Lego Homer says of Maggie, "They're so cute when they're Duplo", a reference to Lego Duplo, a line of Lego bricks designed for very young children.
- Homer looks at a Perky Patty's Princess Shop playset and Comic Book Guy asks if he is an AMFOP, short for "Adult Male Fan of Princesses". This is a reference to adult male fans of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, who are collectively referred to as Bronies.
- When Bart rebuilds Springfield Elementary School to suit his own taste, among the features he adds are Terminator gym teachers.
- Bart combines several playsets to build a giant robot and Comic Book Guy calls it a "mis-setgenation", a wordplay on "miscegenation", an old-fashioned, negative term for the mixing of racial groups.
Continuity
- Superintendent Chalmers and Lunchlady Dora are seen making out in the broom closet, it was mentioned that they were dating in the comic story "The "X" Men".
- Principal Skinner and Mrs. Krabappel were also caught in the janitor's closet together in "Grade School Confidential".
