- The episode's title is a pun on the song "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple.
- On the couch gag, Wile E. Coyote paints a fake couch on the wall which the Simpsons run into and get hurt, parodying the style of Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner cartoons. Maggie then zooms in and says the Road Runner's catchphrase "Meep Meep!".
- The Angelica Button book series is a parody of Harry Potter.
- Milhouse had heard that Spider-Man would be in the new Angelica Button book.
- Some characters in the queue line at Bookaccino's resemble those in Harry Potter:
- Data is wearing a golden costume, referencing the Golden Snitch.
- Skinner is dressed as a centaur, hinting Firenze.
- Comic Book Guy is dressed as a character similar to Rubeus Hagrid.
- Richard has a scar on his forehead, just like Harry Potter.
- The title Angelica Button and the Deadly Denouncement is a loose reference to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as it is the final book.
- Lisa goes quickly through the book and highlights that "Professor Skizzletwitch is a were-bear". This is a parody of Professor Remus Lupin who was a werewolf.
- The family watches CSI: Miami on TV.
- The plot of the episode the family watches is the exact plot of "How to Dial a Murder" from Columbo, wherein a man programs his dogs to kill through a phone call, while he is miles away.
The family watches Entertainment Tonight, in which the hostess mentions the highly acclaimed sitcom Friends
- The family also watches Entertainment Tonight (ET). The hostess leaves the audience with the question "Which former Friends star is speaking out against adult literacy?" To what Bart answers "Lisa Kudrow".
- No. 5 Pas de deux for Two Merry-makers from Act 1 in the ballet Swan Lake by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is heard in the Chazz Busby Ballet Academy commercial.
- Chazz Busby's name is a reference to the famous director and choreographer of musicals Busby Berkeley and his character design is based on Joe Gideon, played by Roy Scheider, in the film All That Jazz directed by Bob Fosse.
- Lisa encourages Marge by telling her that dancer and choreographer Martha Graham danced well into her 70s.
- Homer wanted Marge to be a go-go dancer.
- The ballet moves Busby mentions include Bolshoi fifth position", battement glissé, a double changement de pied, two Swan Lake fouettás and a grand pas de chat.
- Busby mentions the Tony Awards.
- An off-key version of Frédéric Chopin's Waltz in C-sharp minor, Op. 64, No. 2 plays when Lisa first dances ballet.
- Lisa tells the ballerina from her class that smoking is bad, as they show in an episode of The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. The episode Lisa refers to does not exist in real life.
- Homer and Bart made a PowerPoint presentation on jerkies.
- The Mystery of the Odd-Shaped Rock is a fictional book from the real world series The Hardy Boys.
- The smoke ghost of an adult Lisa mentions French existentialist philosopher Simone de Beauvoir, American cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead, Queen of England Elizabeth I, American actress Lauren Bacall, and American playwright Lillian Hellman.
- Lillian Hellman says she invented mayonnaise, referencing the well-known Hellmann's Mayonnaise and mentions Hellmann's tagline "Bring out the best".

- Homer's mispronunciation of "Surgeon-General" as "Sturgeon-General" is a reference to the movie Corrina, Corrina, starring Whoopi Goldberg and Ray Liotta. In it, a small child refers to the "sturgeon-general"'s health warning about the dangers of smoking as an explanation for burying the adult characters' supplies of cigarettes in her sandpit.

- When Bart raises his head out of the pile of leg warmers in the smoke outside, a psychedelic rock song similar to the song "The End" by The Doors is heard, mirroring a sequence in the film Apocalypse Now, where Willard raises from the mud. He is also wearing green camo body paint.
- The music that plays as the raccoon climbs into the Ballet Academy sounds similar to the theme from The Pink Panther.
- After Lisa quits ballet and rejects Busby, he puts on a bowler hat and struts out of the theater to the song "On Broadway" by George Benson, a song featured in All That Jazz.
- Lisa wears Hello Kitty nicotine patches.
