Cultural references[edit]
- The episode title is a reference to the Netflix 2020 documentary film My Octopus Teacher in which diver and filmmaker Craig Foster forges a relationship with a female wild octopus in South Africa.
- Lisa's short film My Cephalopod Soulmate, is a parody of My Octopus Teacher, including the loss of an arm of the octopus due to the attack of a shark, which is a main part of the plot in the original documentary.
- Milhouse said that Bart had Skittles with milk for breakfast.
- Nelson tells Rayshelle Peyton that Bart couldn't "handle the rainbow", in a reference to "taste the rainbow", Skittles' theme.
- Ms. Peyton asked the teachers who were familiar with project-based learning and gave the example of a project based on the New 7 Wonders of the World.
- Miss Hoover is assigned Chichen Itza, which is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, located in Yucatán, Mexico.
- The rest of the New 7 Wonders can be seen during the presentation at the school gym.
- When Miss Hoover finds out that Ms. Peyton has already planned out all their lessons, she calls it the "HelloFresh of teaching". HelloFresh is the famous meal-kit provider that allows users to prepare their own meals based on the food and recipes provided.
- Martin's drawing parodies Hand with Reflecting Sphere, a lithograph by Dutch artist M. C. Escher.
- Lisa goes to Google toxicology stuff.
- While doing his school project, Bart mentions X-Acto, a brand for a variety of cutting tools, and Styrofoam, a brand of building insulation boards.

- At the resort, Bart uses a Tarzan swing.
- The swing's design is based on the Tarzan swing from Grand Wailea Resort.
- Bart says he Hulked out on the school water fountain.
- Homer suggest Bart to tear up Kleenex facial tissues.
- Homer says that he screams into Pringles canisters to let out his feelings.
