The Great Train Wreck is a Bart Simpson story first printed in Bart Simpson #30.
Synopsis[edit]
- "Bart's class visits the Springfield Train Yard and Bart, Martin, and Milhouse decide to sneak into Old Steamy, Springfield's first locomotive."
Plot[edit]
Bart's class arrives at the Springfield Train Yard, which everyone except Principal Skinner finds boring. They are shown Old Steamy, which is Springfield's first locomotive. Kirk Van Houten greets the kids and Milhouse reveals that his father is a train engineer. When Skinner tries to get the children to climb aboard the train, Kirk stops them as he's only allowed to show them the wheels. When Skinner goes to take all the children back to the school bus, Bart, Martin, and Milhouse sneak onto the train to explore.
On the train, Bart and Milhouse start to argue and fight over revealing secrets to other people. During the fight, they accidentally hit the start lever, which sets Old Steamy going. When Skinner goes to try and find the kids, he sees the train start to move and runs after it to try and jump aboard. As he's doing so, Martin reveals to Bart and Milhouse that the brake lever had broken so they couldn't stop the train. As Skinner comes through the train's window, Martin tells everyone that the train's tracks were never finished and they would fall into the Springfield Gorge. Skinner phones the police, but gets no answer as they were playing Twister at the time.
Milhouse becomes calm as he sees a stalled tanker truck on the rails, which he says will stop the train. However, the others panic as it's filled with fuel so they will blow up. Bart and Skinner begin apologizing to each other for everything they have done to each other before the train runs out of fuel before it hits the tanker. After they disembark, Skinner gives Bart two weeks detention for all the bad things he admitted to doing. Milhouse then questions why Skinner got a win as he never won. The end panel hen explains that Bart tricked Skinner into locking himself in a closet during detention, while Kirk lost his train license and Chief Wiggum never played Twister again.
