Cultural references
- The title is a reference to That '70s Show, and the short lived That '80s Show.
- The song that plays whilst the Simpsons are around the fire is "Winter Wonderland" by Felix Bernard and Richard B. Smith.
- Homer mentions that a struggling Matt Groening created Futurama.
- Homer said that young people believed in their dreams thanks to Melrose Place.
- A billboard of Sonic the Hedgehog and Amy Rose is seen.
- Marge says that their happiness was going to unravel, just like Kevin Costner's career, thanks to The Postman.
- A young Comic Book Guy says that The Lord of the Rings can never be filmed.
- Homer is seen reading The Bridges of Madison County.
- When Marge tells Homer that every president has been a straight white man, Homer asks if that includes Walt Disney.
- Marge read the book A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn.
- Homer was watching the Seinfeld episode "The Sponge" and said "Oh Elaine, will you ever find someone who's sponge-worthy?" He then referred to Marge as Newman.
- Homer was drinking Zima.
- The song "Closing Time" by Semisonic plays when Homer and Marge are in bed.
- The statue "Moonbird" by Joan Miró is seen at Springfield University.
- Homer says that the college is nothing like Animal House.
- Sadgasm parodies Nirvana, a nihilist grunge band whose songs are parodied by the band. Homer even occasionally wears the T-shirt Kurt Cobain wore in the music video "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (the green striped t-shirt with long white sleeves).
- Sadgasm's first song "Kisses Are Dirt" is a parody of two of Nirvana's songs combined "Heart-Shaped Box" and "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle".
- The scene where "Marvin Cobain" calls his cousin Kurt to tell him about the new sound he's "been looking for" is a parody of the scene in Back to the Future where "Marvin Berry" makes a similar call to his cousin Chuck.
- As the beans come out of "Cutie-puss", "Bitter Sweet Symphony" by The Verve plays.
- "Weird Al" parodies Homer's song "Shave Me" (Titled "Brain Freeze"), a parody of "Rape Me" by Nirvana, which harkens back to his actual parody of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit".
- Homer's song "Margerine" is a parody of "Glycerine" by Bush.
- Marge mentions that Britney Spears is on the horizon.
- Homer mentions that there will never be a president worse than Bill Clinton.
- Homer mentions the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.
- The nerd at the Sadgasm concert has a lunch-box with Bender on it.
Trivia
- The songs sung by Sadgasm were, "Margerine", "Back Rub" and "Politically Incorrect (Kisses Are Dirt)".
Goofs
- Amy Rose was shown to have her "New Generation" appearance that was first introduced in Sonic Adventure, which wasn't released in America until the year 1998.
- This episode conflicts with other 'flashback' episodes. Past 'flashback' episodes feature Homer and Marge in their twenties/ early thirties during the eighties and early nineties and already had Bart, Lisa and even Maggie. This is due to the floating timeline that prevents anyone in the Simpsons from aging with no suitable reason as to why.
