Cultural references
- The title and episode plot is a reference to the 2004 movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
- The plot and imagery are an homage to It's a Wonderful Life.
- The chalkboard gag refers to Hannah Montana.
- Scrat the Squirrel from Ice Age makes an appearance.
- The closing song is "Day After Day" by Badfinger.
- Homer falls off a bridge only to be saved and have a surprise party for him. Similar to The Game with Michael Douglas.
- The Forget-Me-Shot is a parody of a Forget-me-not.
- Homer's journey through the tunnel of memories is a reference to 2001: A Space Odyssey.
- The Synergy Wireless commercial has "A Beautiful Morning" by The Rascals playing over it.
- The montage of Homer's life flashing before his eyes is a parody of Everyday. a viral video by New York photographer Noah Kalina. There is even a reference to the YouTube replay screen after the montage ends.

- This is the second time Homer tries to jump off the only bridge out of town, the first being "Homer's Odyssey", but in that episode he never got near the bridge, whereas he did in this one.
- The snowman in front of the Springfield Retirement Castle is wearing glasses and using a walker.
- The sign at the bridge Homer jumps off of says: "Suicide Bridge: In Memory of Governor Chester L. Suicide".
- When Homer says "I'm a genius", Krusty is shown sitting at a table and he is colored yellow instead of having on his usual white clown makeup.
- Homer's "memories" are just screenshots of every single episode of the show that came before this one, even including non-canon episodes.
- On what was called The BOX (now SKY 5) in New Zealand, this episode didn't finally air until Christmas Day 2009, due to a slight delay in the rotation, which was caused by a random mix-up of episodes (and when they were meant to premiere).
- A similar incident happened on the same network earlier, "Two Bad Neighbors" was expected to air in 1997, but the cause of the rotation from seasons 1-6 were aired out of order, and the episode didn't air until 1998 on the network.
- The network returned to premiering episodes in September 2010, with "Take My Life, Please".
