Cultural References
- The title is either a reference to Eazy-E's song, "Boyz-n-the-Hood", or the 1991 film Boyz n the Hood.
- The song "Springfield, Springfield" is adapted from the song "New York, New York" in the 1944 Broadway musical On The Town.
- The Junior Campers are a parody of the Boy Scouts.
- When the raft is adrift at sea and Homer says, "Water, water, everywhere, so let's all have a drink", he is misquoting a famous line from the poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. In the poem, the line reads, "Water, water every where, nor any drop to drink"; it is commonly quoted (with modern phrasing) as "Water, water, everywhere, but not a drop to drink".
Trivia
- In the opening scene Bart and Milhouse are overheard by security guards saying they have ran out of money. It shows both guards using keys to activate a door. In reality two key systems have to have the keys far enough apart so that a single human cannot activate (usually) the nuclear ICBM
- Ms. Botz, the Baby-Sitter Bandit and Fat Tony appear on wanted posters in Chief Wiggum's office.
- On his sash, Bart has badges for: Archery, Debt Collecting, Embalming, TV Trivia, and Patch Forgery.
- Everyone in the arcade is queued up for the Terminator game.
- At the end when Ernest Borgnine and the children are sitting around singing "Bingo", a presence attacks Ernest Borgnine. This is a reference to Jason Voorhees, the horror movie killer from the classic Friday the 13th series who lives at an abandoned camp called Crystal Lake.
- Despite the Junior Campers which broke off from Flanders and Homer having been attacked by the stalker, one of the junior campers, Adrian is seen in following episodes, meaning that he survived the attack.
- The abandoned summer camp at the end appears to be what's left of Kamp Krusty.
Goofs
- When Bart and Milhouse first go to the Kwik-E-Mart for their Squishee, the two flavors are red and purple. When Apu pours the Squishee, they are both purple. And then when he's done, the two flavors are purple and green. (The Squishee that Apu serves the boys is green.)
- During the Itchy & Scratchy cartoon ("Aaahhh! Wilderness!"), the pole that Itchy uses to prop Scratchy up into a tent shape disappears when Scratchy is lit by lightning.
- Despite the "two dads per boat" rule, none of the fathers are seen in the abandoned camp with the rest of the troop.
- The Krusty Burger map has Mississippi incorrectly labeled as MI. Mississippi's official postal abbreviation is MS; Michigan's is MI.
- During Bart's vision of what Homer's behavior would be like if he took him on the rafting trip, some of the other troop members/father's speech wasn't lip-synched.
Continuity
- The all-syrup Squishee is later advertised in the comic story Blow Your Mind with the All-Syrup Super Squishee.
- Bart also gets lost during a Junior Campers event (this time partnered with Ralph Wiggum) in the comic story Ralph vs. Wild. Ralph behaves in the same bumbling, but ultimately serendipitous, fashion as Homer does on the rafting trip.
