Cultural references
- The episode title is a pun on "How I Spent My Summer Vacation", which is the title of a 1997 romantic comedy film as well as an often-assigned topic in school writing assignments (particularly at the start of fall term).
- It could also be considered a reference to Joe Strummer, rhythm guitarist and lead singer of The Clash.

- In the UK, this episode is called 'My Strummer Vacation'.
- The Rolling Stones welcome everyone to Rock 'n' Roll Camp by playing the opening chords of their song "Start Me Up."
- When Elvis Costello takes Homer's guitar and drives back to get the pick the guitar changes color from red to a mustard sort of color.
