Cultural references
- Citizen Kane: The segment title, "Citizen Kang," is a parody of the 1941 film Citizen Kane.
- Basket Case: Bart and Hugo being Siamese twins separated at birth is a reference to this.
- Twilight Zone: "The Genesis Tub" is inspired by the 1962 The Twilight Zone episode called "The Little People," where astronauts stumble upon a tiny civilization on an asteroid.
- The segment was referenced in South Park episode, "Simpsons Already Did It", when Eric Cartman created his "Sea People" with semen.
- The Outer Limits: "The Genesis Tub" also closely resembles the 2-part series premiere of the modern incarnation of "The Outer Limits" titled "The Sandkings" (parts I & II respectively) which first aired a year and a half prior to ToH VII. The main character "grows" his own mini-civilization which experiences rapid generational advances, and begins to build complex structures out of the sand. The main character becomes power-crazed with a "god complex."
- The Exorcist: On the first disc of The Complete Fourteenth Season, an alternate opening for the episode can be accessed via an Easter egg in the episode menu for "Treehouse of Horror XIII". The scene in question sees Reverend Lovejoy trying to exorcise Lisa (who is possessed) who acts in a similar manner to Regan MacNeil before her head spins 360 degrees and barfs the title on the camera.
Trivia
- Among the items seen in the attic as Bart, Lisa and Maggie investigate the noises are several stacks of unsold copies of Homer's autobiography, Homer, I Hardly Knew Me.
- We learn that Kodos is female, she is Kang's sister. However, this is contradicted in other episodes.
Goofs
- In the first story, when Lisa asks whether she has two brothers the bottom of Lisa's neck is a single line that overlaps her necklace. This is likely a layering error where her neck is meant to be put behind her necklace but was accidentally put in front of it instead.
- In the crowd cheering "Clinton", Apu has a black jacket instead of a green one, while Sanjay has yellow skin and a blue shirt.
- In the same scene, Sanjay's green pants turn blue for a few frames.
- In the shot after that when "Bob Dole" is about to speak, there is an empty space in the crowd between a few people that repeatedly is accidentally colored red.
- The metal lines in the tanks containing the real candidates are in most shots at a height that covers their genitals. However, when the tanks are shown from the back, the metal lines appear significantly lower.
