Cultural references

  • The episode title is a pun on the Independence Day holiday and the phenomenon of codependency. (Marge shows many co-dependent characteristics.)
    • Because of the episode's focus on the Cosmic Wars movies, the title could also be considered a reference to the 1996 sci-fi film Independence Day.
  • Cosmic Wars is an obvious parody of Star Wars:
    • The Cosmic Wars film The Gathering Shadow is a reference to, and parody of, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
    • Cosmic Wars creator Randall Curtis is a parody of Star Wars creator George Lucas.
    • The character Jim-Jam Bonks in Cosmic Wars is in turn a parody of Jar Jar Binks from The Phantom Menace.
    • The comments that Lisa and Luigi make about Jim-Jam being a negative stereotype reflect the real-life controversy surrounding allegations that Jar Jar Binks was a stereotype of the Jamaican people.
    • Bart's and Lisa's telling Randall Curtis that the Cosmic Wars movies have "lost their way" is a reference to many Star Wars fans' real-life criticisms of the Star Wars prequel trilogy, particularly The Phantom Menace. (When the episode first aired, the last prequel movie, Revenge of the Sith, had not yet been released.)
  • During the montage of Homer and Marge on their drinking binge, the song playing is "Let's Misbehave", which was written by Cole Porter in 1927.
  • When Homer retaliates against the rehab clinic's putting him on hold by treating them to his own version of on-hold music, the songs he sings are "Wichita Lineman" and "MacArthur Park", both of which were written by Jimmy Webb.

Goofs

  • When Bart and Lisa are taking the tour of Randall Curtis's ranch, they are sitting at the front of the bus. Seconds later they are at the back of the bus escaping.
  • In the scene where Homer realizes Marge is strapped into the passenger seat of the upside-down car, Marge has three eyes.
  • When Homer, Bart and Lisa leave the movie theaters, if you look closely, a person wearing a black cape is in the front of the line. In other shots, it's a person with a blue cape.
