Synopsis[edit]

"When Marge becomes obsessed with a Japanese style of living, the Simpsons must part with any item that no longer brings them joy. For Homer, this means finding a new home for the family pig. For Lisa, it means saying goodbye to her beloved sax."

Plot[edit]

Several monks were handcrafting the book The Japanese Warrior Monks' Guide to Tidying Up, a book to teach people to reach "the state of entidyment," when they were told that America had ordered a shipment of one million books. When they found this out, all the monks were fired, and robots made the books in a factory instead. When one of the robots was told it had put two front covers on the book, it committed seppuku.

The Simpsons went to the Springfield Car Wash, and Marge bought the book. Homer bought some sushi and ended up in the hospital. The family reunited at home, and Marge made them follow the book's teachings, giving up anything that no longer brought them joy. Lisa gave up some of her Malibu Stacy dolls, Bart claimed all his things gave him joy, and Homer gave up his Mr. Plow jacket.

Marge told Homer he had to give up Plopper and find him a new place to live, so he posted an announcement on Gregslist. Snake was the first to offer, but Homer refused and got into a windowless van to return home. Bart, Lisa, and Homer went to Luigi's and saw Joyce Carol Oates at a table, but Luigi forbade them from entering with the pig unless it became a therapy animal. Homer decided to make Plopper one, but Lisa had an anxiety attack, and Homer tried to get a prescription for anxiety at Dr. Bud's Medicinal Marijuana Clinic, only to turn to Dr. Nick, who gave him some pills.

Lisa got rid of everything in her room and discovered her sax no longer gave her joy. Meanwhile, Homer brought Plopper to the Power Plant, placing him on his seat and telling Marge he'd bring him everywhere he went so she wouldn’t see him anymore. At the Springfield nuclear family day picnic, Lisa gave up her sax, while Plopper was greased up by kids, and the Hounds attacked him. Dr. Budgie visited him, and to avoid a lawsuit, Mr. Burns and Smithers agreed to take care of him.

Back home, Lisa was empty of joy after giving away everything, so Bart helped her at school by playing music she liked over the intercom. At Burns' manor, Dr. Budgie fixed up Plopper, and Burns had some great moments with him. Homer came to check on him and saw Burns dancing with the pig. Lisa got her joy back but missed her things, so Marge took her to Springfield Lock 'N' Leave Storage Facility and revealed she had kept everything there. They retrieved it, disturbing Gil.

Homer returned to the manor at night and got back his animal friend, and to keep him, he told Marge he'd give up beer. That night, Homer had a dream of a Hellman's mayonnaise cartoon, similar to one he'd had earlier, and woke up from the nightmare after seeing they prepared hamburgers with fruit on the sides.
