Cultural references[edit]
- The episode title is a reference to the 1997 action film Face/Off.
- Sigmund Freud, founder of psychoanalysis, appears on the episode's couch gag.
- According to Homer, he had a relationship with Ali MacGraw during his years in college.
- Kappa Gamma Tau (KΓT) is a parody of the real collegiate sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma (ΚΚΓ).
- Krusty's comedy "K's" include King Kong and Kato Kaelin.
- "Aloha Moe" is a parody of the Hawaiian folk song "Aloha ʻOe".
- Homer draws Godzilla and Superman.
- The "Life in Hell" topic on the First Church of Springfield marquee is a reference to Matt Groening's comic strip Life in Hell.
- Reverend Lovejoy is talking about the First Epistle to the Corinthians.
- Lovejoy tries to play "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore" on an electric guitar.
- American Football commentator mentions Land O'Lakes.
- Marge thinks that Anton Lubchenko's foot should be insured by Lloyd's of London, a British insurance market.
- "(I've Had) The Half-Time of My Life" is a parody of the famous hit "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warne.
- Homer calls Anton Lubchenko "Baryshnikov", the famous Latvian and American dancer.
- The man with holes in his body is a reference to the same scene in The Mask.
Trivia[edit]
- The episode's Dean Peterson doesn't seem to be the same Dean Peterson Homer ran over during a prank in "Homer Goes to College".
- Homer sings "Aloha 'Oe" two episodes in a row. In the previous episode, he sings it while undergoing treatment in the electric needle hut. In this episode, he sings it while showing Lisa his animated drawings of Moe doing the hula in a grass skirt (however, this time, it's actually "Aloha Moe").
- The Exterminator Tent Bart uses was also seen in the episode "Bart Sells His Soul", an episode built similarly on conflicts of faith.
- During the end of the song "Testify", there are three close-up shots on Bart. During the second close-up, Bart is wearing his cape, but in the next shot, he is not.
Goofs[edit]
- When the bucket falls on Homer's head, he's wearing a hat. The bucket should have slipped off stuck to the hat, not Homer's head, without the need for pulling. When the bucket is removed, the hat seems to be no longer there.
- During the end of the song Testify, there are three close-up shots on Bart. During the second close-up, Bart is wearing his cape but in the next shot, he is not.
- When Brother Faith says "But that's not God's angle!" his eyebrows disappears.
- In the scene where Homer is designing his homecoming float and Ned confronts him about him stealing his flowers and salting his garden, the inside of Ned's and Homer's mouths are dark yellow, rather than the usual black.
