Synopsis[edit]

Homer and Marge recount the story of their transition from loving their life without kids to being miserable parents. While Marge was a journalist, Homer was popular and successful, until Bart came along and changed their lives.

Plot[edit]

In Capital City, after enjoying a superhero movie and, at Bart and Lisa's insistent request, staying until after the credits for the mid- and post-credit sequences, the Simpson family leave to go back home when they come across the old district they used to live in. They decide to visit their old apartment, much to the kids' annoyance.

They meet the new owners of the apartment, Miles and his wife, who gives Marge mail that still gets delivered there. In it, Marge discovers that pacifiers are choking hazards. After having her pacifier taken away, Maggie starts picking items from the electrical outlet to replace it. When she grabs a rat, Marge gives her back a perfume dispenser instead.

They tell the story of the time before they had kids, explaining how Marge was a journalist for the Springfield Shopper while Homer worked at a new company, Flashmouth. They spent their nights partying, watching movies, and stargazing on top of a car. Homer was popular with his boss, Ross. Then Bart came along, and everything changed.

Homer and Marge no longer had as much time to themselves. Homer lost his job because he had a kid, and Marge was threatened by JJ Gruff with being replaced by Barbara "Booberella" Lelavinski unless she brought in a decent nightlife story instead of parenting articles. Attempting to write one, Marge interviewed artist John Baldessari. Homer arrived with Bart and told her Bart refused to sleep. Bart then caused chaos, destroying an art exhibit. When Marge presented the story and photos to JJ Gruff, she lost her job because the paper lost its art advertisers due to the damage Bart caused at the Art Gallery.

Bart continued to cause problems. While Marge worked, she left Bart at Springfield Gymdandee, but he caused so much trouble there that he was banned. Homer and Marge then visited the church to get help from Reverend Lovejoy. Lovejoy showed them a short film, Problem Child, which claimed that having another kid would help calm Bart down. After that, they had Lisa.

During this story, Miles' wife leaves for good, saying she doesn't want to be around people like the Simpsons and no longer wants kids as a result of hearing their story. The Simpsons shout out the window to her, pretending to be a happy family, and she comes back to Miles. Miles then tells the Simpsons to leave before they tell any more of their story.

At the end, the family returns to Springfield, while Lisa asks to hear more stories from their past. They stop at The Doughy Dozen Bagels to get some bagels. Homer and Marge eat alone but are disturbed by the kids moving around in the car, while Grampa watches them.

Production[edit]

Originally the episode was set to air on March 18, 2018,[1] it was then set to air on the date "Homer Is Where the Art Isn't" was going to air, but was once again set back as 13th episode and pushed one more week later.
